Cpu bottlenecking a system??

Post by Cyberduke »

Hi, my friend want to upgrade his system and came to me for advice. when he is done with the upgrade his system specs will look like this. (He will be upgrading Ram and his gpu.)

-intel Celeron cpu(not exactly sure witch one)
-nvidia gts450 or gtx460
-4gb ram

I told him that he should start saving after this for a better cpu. Which will include a new mobo. Because my opinion is that the cpu will be bottlenecking his system. But it should be fine for now. Then his cousin (which I heard is an it pro) suddenly jumped into the picture and said that I speak a load of bul******* and that a cpu and gpu have nothing to do with each other.

I then tried to explain that those 3 components work together especially on a gaming pc. But his cousin still says that the cpu will make no difference to the performance of the gpu.

IT pro, yea right  . The CPU and the GPU have a lot to do with each other. So yes get rid of the celeron and get something better, but money is probably an issue so he can just get a new CPU(I assume he has skt 775). A Pentium dual core or something should be enough.

As for his idiotic cousin, ask him why a core 2 based Pc with a GTX570 will be no faster than the same PC with a HD5770 in it.....

Yes that CPU is a bottleneck. The max he's gonna get out of his system is along the lines of a 8800gt at most. If he really wants to go intel budget then he should go i3. Where the hell is he getting a Celeron from anyway? Didn't those die out long ago?

+1 To what the others have said. A slow CPU will bottleneck the system especially a Celeron...

He just went into our small local pc shop and asked for a nice gaming pc. That was 5 years ago.

5 years ago would make it the Cedar Mill Celeron Processor. Which could make it the Celeron D which has the following chip specs:
Celeron D (Cedar Mill)
» Netburst microarchitecture
» Budget desktop CPU
» Up to 3.6 GHz
» 533 MHz FSB
» 512 KB L2 cache
» 64-bit
» Execute Disable bit
» SSE3
Socket 775
If its that bugger then it will hold back all current GPU's. However one has to ask what screen resolution is he looking to play on? Read the following link as to why I am asking:

What's the point of this thread :?:

Your friend and his "IT Pro" cousin are idiots.
Let him build the system he wants and laugh at him when it stutters like a mofo in-game.

Well....I actually forgot to ask. What performance is he going to get on his pc with that specs?
However one has to ask what screen resolution is he looking to play on?
Well, he usually (even now) takes the best resolution the game can offer.

Little to no performance when trying to play a modern game.

Find out what games he wants to play.

Google the minimum CPU requirements for the game and show him the results.

If that doesn't convince him that he needs a more modern CPU then **** him, he's too stupid to help.

I'd say if he is under a very tight budget and cant complain about performance then this is what he should look at:

Intel i3 2100 - R1000
H61 board - R500-R900
ATI/AMD Radeon 5770 - R1300
2x2GB DDR3 1333Mhz ram for duel channeling - R300-R400
And just to be safe:
Coolermaster 550W psu - R550

I cannot recommend this system without flinching but if your strapped for cash and other jack asses recommends a celeron then dammit this thing will be like entering heaven (even if it is like hell to the rest of us).

Bwahahahahah. Were they being sarcastic

Celeron and gaming do not go together, now that I think of it Celeron is useless at everything :|

It seems that his friend is a noob and he values the so-called "IT pro's" opinion too much

And yes I would love to see the look on his face when his upgrade falls flat
