CellC Gaming

Post by novio »

Hey all,

Last night I pretty much gave up with my ISP. I used to play a lot of WOW, but have cut down a lot, leaving one night a week dedicated to playing. I have been using iBurst for a few years and for the most part it has been ok. But having 1 night a week dedicated to my gaming leaves little or no patience when it comes to connection reliability. 99% of the time, my signal strength is between 80% and 90%. Last night it was all over the place. My ping kept on jumping from 300 to 6k....making the game virtually unplayable.

1. i know its quite silly to be on an iBurst connection if you want to game....so please dont remind me:) As mentioned earlier, it really has been good to me, generally. A hard fixed adsl line is not an option for me at this point.
2. I called them up and asked to upgrade to their CellC package. They only stock the 7.2Mbps speedstick.

So.....maybe this has already been discussed, but I have not been on the forum for ages.
Has anyone tried this bundle out with games like wow?

Thanks:)

Only thing I could find was this link:

I have a ADSL line so I have no experience when it comes to gaming on wireless.

I have the 21mb stick and to say it is insufficient is a lie. Ye you get lag spikes but you get that on DSL too.

So Ruad is it playable? Have you used Ibust before? If so is Cell-C better or worse?

Cell-C is in some cases even better than DSL imho... dunno about iburst though. Heard iburst has terrible lag

The iBurst consultant said that the CellC 7.2 Mbps dongle is essentially 7 times faster than the iBurst modem.
I have requested the upgrade, and will hopefully be getting the dongle tomorrow.

Guess we shall see how things go:)

Well on the 21mb stick I constantly get latencies of 280-350 in WoW which is actually not bad for SA. I used to have a 4Mb DSL line and with that it was on average around 400-450

Cant get the 21mb stick unfortunately. 280-350 is what most adsl users in SA get.

Ideally, I would just like a constant signal with lowest ping. If I get 400 - 450 with the 7.2mb stick, I'll be happy. Hell, even a constant 600 would be enough to enjoy raiding.

Agreed 600 is cool for raiding in most cases...

Got the dongle installed over the weekend. Logged into Stormwind where ping usually gets quite anal. I was only in for about 5 minutes but the ping was in the low 400's and was gradually dropping. I'm sure it would round off to less than 400. Signal strength seemed constant at 98% so I am quite happy with the results.

I will play quite a lot on tuesday and let you guys know how it pans out. I stay in Mooikloof ridge which is basically almost out in the bush of Pretotia. Lets hope that the signal strenght stays a lot more consistant than the iBurst modem.

A bit of a late reply, but for any other battling iburst users out there... The Omni Directional Antenna they have, significantly improves your signal strength.... We have been on Iburst for years now, (now have 4mb ADSL, and Iburst backup) and lived in two different houses... both times the signal was pretty erratic until installing an Antenna. Now get a constant 100% signal strength, even during the worst weather. Still very slow compared to the ADSL though :p
