Have you assessed your pc recently?
So I had to assess my pc for insurance purposes and all I can say is HOW DID I MANAGE THIS!?
At current my pc with screen and speakers, mouse and keyboard and everything in the box comes to a value of R40000. Check my sig for hardware details then add a G5 mouse, a MS natural keyboard and the never mentioned dvd-rw.

Re: Have you assessed your pc recently?
Well let's analyze it:
CPU - R2800
M/B - R2200
GFX - R5000
Screen - R5000
Ram - R3000
S/card - R800
Speakers - R2300 (and discontinued)
Case - R1800
PSU - R1000
Intel SSD - R5000
OCZ SSD - R5000
Kingston SSD - R3000
Mouse + KB - R1000
DVD-RW - R200
Count it: R38100
You can add Win7 and Office is you want. Thats R2k for the essencial software but not included.
Things become shocking once you lay it out bit by bit. With all the trade ins I did I probably spent R20k on my pc for the past 3 years.

Re: Have you assessed your pc recently?
Mine comes in at around 15K. I just want another gpu in xfire and I'll be finished. Maybe buy another 4gb ram one day, and little bits and bobs here and there but I'm happy where I'm at now. I could never spend 3k on ram, 5k on a screen and 3k on an SSD! Ouch!

Re: Have you assessed your pc recently?
What can I say? Once your pc reached a certain limit the next things to upgrade costs an arm, leg and kidney. The 120hz for the screen was absolutely worth it. The SSDs beyond the intel one is somewhat of an overkil but so be it.

Re: Have you assessed your pc recently?
What you paid for your hardware a year ago (or whatever) is not necessarily what insurance companies with reimburse you if it gets damaged.
Just go and try to claim 40K for your PC and see how quickly they will chuck your claim out the window or offer you only a small percentage of that.
Not unreasonable really, since you probably couldn't sell the entire machine as a unit for close to that second hand.
What pisses me off is that they will happily let you insure your machine for whatever price you put down and charge you a premium based on that, then do a quick about-face when it comes time to pay-up.

Re: Have you assessed your pc recently?
Yeah- it's one of my major gripes with insurance, and not just for electronics. Same thing with cars and bikes
I do know of one instance where someone insured a laptop for x amount and after a few years claimed that full amount back- after one heck of a fight with them. Sadly this is almost unheard of and you'll end up drawing the shortest straw.

Re: Have you assessed your pc recently?
I know the value 2nd hand does go down fast. I did say though that I don't care for the money but they must find the replacement parts. Don't know if that will help but frankly if they can get the same thing for less good for them. My concern is when I walk in and out the same system will stand there down to the same wiring.

Let's give this a bash:

M/B - R1080
Mem - R1570
Case - R646
GFX - R3187

Mouse - R250
PSU - R600
Screen - R2500
HDD's - R1500
CPU Cooler + extra fan - R300
Total: R14 535
And this is hardly a top of the range pc.

Re: Have you assessed your pc recently?
Perhapes we should toss in the question every how often do you change something in your setup and do you trade in or buy from scratch?
Because speakers I got when I was 21 and havent replaced since. The G5 and Natural keyboard hasnt been replaced and got it 4-6 years ago. The i7 was from 2 years back I believe and so on. The ram I bought 4gb than the other 4gb later on. Its this add, add, add thing that eventually get the count high.

I bought this system last year and I kept the PSU and hard drives from the previous pc. My logitech x-530's are also a good 6 years old me thinks, but they still sell for the same price today!
Then after that I added another 2GB of ram, the logitech gamepad, the cpu cooler and the mouse and bought a new DVD-writer. Then apart from all this I have the small things like webcam, alu mouse pad, mic and headphones.
I will only replace when something breaks now. I've spent too much $$ on the pc already.

Yup. Bastids. That is why I will be cancelling my bikes insurance when I pay it off this month and only go for 3rd party. I have paid over 10K on insurance and never claimed.doo_much wrote:+1jamin_za wrote:What pisses me off is that they will happily let you insure your machine for whatever price you put down and charge you a premium based on that, then do a quick about-face when it comes time to pay-up.

But we are buying a 3rd vehicle and I want to keep the bike just for weekends and the odd work and back trip.
Otherwise it will be garaged and if I do have a prang, then at least I have other transport.
