Radio wireless- from Wave Stream.. Need advise.

Post by satrod »

I live in an old house in Arcadia, Pretoria- and the area has not gotten ADSL as the damn lines here are fibre and not copper lines! So ISDN is an option.

How is Radio wireless? Does it work anywhere? Is the speed constant and steady? Would this be better than ISDN?

Any advise please?

Thanks.

We use the wireless/tel method. It is more expensive that ADSL or ISDN because it it up constantly. The price depends on the bandwidth you purchase they normally offer 32, 64 and 128 but it all comes at a price! I use 32 around R770 per month. The line is steady and the speed constant. We have a small computer link that Wi-Tel supplied which in turn is connected to the satellite dish outside. This is a small dish, hardly notice it outside. One problem though, you must have "line of sight" with the suppliers receiving dish which is usually placed on a high rise building somewhere like the top of Unisa. Hope this helps!

Yo SnowMonkey with the new hairstyle!

Who: We use a company known as Wi-Tel in Cape Town. We are a small company and have a contract for 1 to 5 user. Their hardware gateway is connected to our office hub and all the comps are obviously connected to this. It is a 24 hour service.

Where: Like I said in CT but they are national.

What: We had to buy the gateway which comes with 32kpps Internet and wireless access, IP address, Server setup, Office router, Firewall IP MASQ and ISP charges.

There was a one off cost factor involved, namely the purchase of the hardware, this is a comp, running Linux, no monitor or keyboard, price around 5 grand. I do not know what would apply at home!
Our total for all eight computers connected is around 2 grand a month. Would need to find out what the home user costs would be.

I don´t know if this is of any help at all but as I said initially it is not cheap. The abysmal Telkom lines in our area forced us to look at alternatives and we settled on this one. It did bring the phone bills down enormously but for home use, I really do not know!
Snowie, I thought you were in Durban not Cape Town? If you´re in Durban, there is a guy in the Hillcrest area you can contact. I´ll get his details for you tomorrow if you want me to?

Spoke to Wi-Tel this morning and kakked them out, told them that my fine reputation was being besmirched by their incompetence! They grovelled and told me that the site was under consruction again because they are going in for the "hotspot" comms thing, you know like M-Web are doing. You find an area where they have a spot covered by wireless and you can then hook up using the same. Airports and so on I presume. SM is in Toti I believe so the Hillcrest guy would be better!

[ Edited by lancelot On Date
July 31, 2003 ]

Hey Lancelot, what´s up with Wi-Tel? Still can´t get onto their website. Are they still upgrading or is it for clients only?
