Write Protected UFD

Post by Slimshaedy »

Hey guys I got given a 4gb ufd but its write proteercted so I can't format or anything so I tried playing around in disk management and can't find anything useful there. I cleared the attributesd using command and that doesn't work. I'm trying to find the attributes in the registry but its taking a bit longer than expected:) I can't think of any other ideas. Can anyone help?

The disk has no hardware write protect switches?

Tried other USB ports or possibly another pc?

Maybe there is something launching itself into memory when the disk is inserted, locking the drive because it marks a file as in use?

just to let u know what iv tried.... i looked for hardware write protect switches and nothing.... i tried formatting, tried formatting through CMD, downloded some software and tried a low level format. i tried Hp Disk tool, i tried a method through the registry i found on the net, and that didnt work. i then downloded a registry entry that would overwrite my exisiting one and that never worked either....
Not sure what else could be tried....

There might be some small switches in there to lock the drive or a component might be faulty

It would be weird to put a switch there and its never been opened before so it couldn't have been switched over... I'm hoping for the best with this flash drive :)

Check that the disk size is correct, that the PC matches the packaging.

I suspect that for 100 bucks, you'd be better buying a new one and dropping the old one behind your car tire!

Hmmm... you were given the drive... Was it new - a present? Was it used - and possibly infected with malware and your machine could also now be infected?

Have you tried something like Ultimate Boot CD or Hiren's Boot CD which is a bootable CD that allows you to do things like format USB flash disks without booting into Windows or whatever OS you're running?

It was given to me by the jelly. He couldn't get it working so he said I could have it. So I've been trying and I can't either.

I was wondering if there's some kind of software that might fix it... Looks like its broken to me

Did jelly pay R20 for this UFD (that's a new one on me!) at a robot in Alberton North? Because, if so, there may be somewhere else to look for faulty switches.

How old is this drive? Flash drives sometimes just die. It's sad and it can't always be explained. They're kinda like puppies that way. Except most puppies can't be forced very easily into a USB port.

Hahaha I'm not sure where he got it from... But if its faulty its faulty. I bought a 32GB from the robots, and it worked, but VERY slow. So I thought I'll copy all my pics onto there so I formatted to ntfs but now its completely blank. I can't even get to formatting... So now I have 2 broken UFDs:(

If you purchased a flash drive from the robots and expected it to work, please do not familiarise yourself with the name Harold Camping.
