Help!! New System Build

Post by Giuli575 »

Hey guys, Im new to the forum and am looking for some help!

Im looking at building a mid-range great value-for-money (+-R7500.00) multimedia machine.

This is the first time im building a rig, and need some assistance/reassurance in my choices.

The machine will be used for general stuff including some CAD/Design software (autocad, Solidworks etc) some video editing and some basic gaming (Sims 3 and maybe some stuff a bit more hardcore)

I definitely want a multitasking machine with as little lag as possible.

After some internet research i spec'd the following: (prices are from Sybaritic.co.za)

CPU - Intel Core i5 2500 R1799.00
GPU - Sapphire Game Edition Radeon HD5770 R1351.00
M/Board - Asus P8P67 LGA1155 motherboard R1710.00
PSU - Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus RS-460-PCAR Power Supply - 460W R 409.00
Chassis - Cooler Master RC-310 Elite 310 Mid Tower Chassis R 334.00
Optical Drive - LG GH22LP20 R 231.00
HDD - Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green SATA300 64MB Hard Drive R 789.00
RAM - JetRam DDR3-1333 8GB (2x4GB) Memory Module Kit R 752.00

Total (excl Win7 64bit) = R7375.00

What do you think???

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Looks good but I would get a 550W/650W psu if you ever intend on getting a new graphics card. Other than that the system seems solidly built for what you want to do with it. But Win 7 64bit home premium is R1200 extra.

Id go i7 2600 or 2600k (if u keen to OC) for the hyperthreading, would help with decoding etc...
and as Jamin said an SSD would def speed things up... if they out your price range at least go for a caviar blue or black just for the 7200rpm...

[Sapphire Radeon 6870 @ 975/1200 1.2V] [Coolermaster V6 GT] [WD Caviar Black 640GB SATA3 6Gbps]

Def upgrade the PSU by a bit-itll do but itll cost you more in the long run so see if you can go the extra bit.
I would get Corsair Vengence if I was you even if it was 4gigs now and another 4gigs later.

Other than that a basic motherboard works for Sandy bridge and the CPU is good if not maybe the i7 which everyone is running.

The GPU is a little basic but a 560Ti I think is out of reach for you.

Thanks for the replies!!

I think SSD might be too expensive for now, but was looking at the caviar black 7200rpm drives, the price is about 2x the caviar green price. Is the performance gain worth that much more?

For the PSU i will definately look at getting a bigger one (i wasnt sure about the size initially)

Do you think its worth getting the i7 2600 over the i5 2500?

Thanks again for the assistance!!!

yes you get hyperthreading which is 4 more threads. i5= 4 cores/4 threads and i7= 4 cores/8 threads. the performance isnt that much of an increase, but for video editing youre always looking for that extra bit of performance in the hdd.

With the R7500 budget I dont see where you can magicaly pull another R1k for a cpu or another R1.5k for the 560ti. The i7 might not be entirely worth it yet. And like you said your main focus is non gaming.

Yeah but the hard drive should be as fast as possible-it might as well be a media center with a slow hard drive like that.
