Re: The Official Android Thread, V2.0

I just got into Toti this evening when MTN called. I jumped in my car and bolted to Pavillion to fetch it before they closed :D

All this time I've been using phones that fall apart when touching them. What an absolute pleasure it is to use my phone again, even in its complete stock state!

To give you an idea of how long I've been waiting...

Took it in, waited two weeks, got it back. All they did was flash it. Took it back a week later.

I booked it in on the 26th of March. It's been a painful 5 and a half weeks! No words can describe it!

Seriously though, I was hoping for a complete swap out. They changed the motherboard though. I know that because the IMEI has changed.

Going to test the GPS soon...

Have fun! :) Glad to hear the mobo was changed.

On my side I have some very depressing news... :( The glue under the "C" on the back cover has lost its stick so the "C" keeps on falling off ...

iPad 2.... main hype about that is something called FaceTime???

also iirc FaceBook attempted to sue Apple over the Face in FaceTime.
I won't mind getting a tablet pc one day, but right now i think they all need a few more editions before then.

I disagree - would not be without my tablet. Yes there is a better one out already but I love mine. Not had a moments trouble with it

Yeah. I've had a tablet since December, and while the novelty has worn off, I still use it all the time...

I still can't decide which tablet I want. I am waiting to see the reviews on the HTC Flyer before I decide but I definitely want a tablet.

I don't know... I can't help but agree with Ryan. I've had a good close look at Honeycomb, and I'm just not impressed. It's great, but the iPad just feels like a much more finished device. Hardware wise, software wise, it's just something I seem to enjoy more.

With an better version of Honeycomb/Android on there, Android tablets have the potential to be WAY better than the iPad, but for now, it's just not happening.

btw, I played with the iPad 2 a few days ago. That thing is freaking ugly. Gosh. I actually find it hard to believe that Apple would drop something that ugly. The first iPad is infinitely better looking.

So you don't think the reviewer of the xoom on the the register knew what he was talking about Dae?

I didn't read that review, and I've read so many Xoom reviews that I'll probably have to kill myself before I read another :P What exactly did he say GW? :)

Whatever it was that he said that I'm apparently opposed to, I won't say that he doesn't know what he's talking about - everything I said in my last post was a matter of opinion. To ME, Honeycomb doesn't look ready, or finished. If you're referring to my not liking the iPad 2, that's my opinion too :)

Check previous page, I posted a link.

But he did say he likes the Xoom so much, he is using it more than his iPad.

Oh yes, I did read that.

Yeah, I guess it's a matter of opinion hey. Android and iOS are very different OSes, and they appeal to different people in different ways. Personally, android tablets aren't tickling my fancy. I REALLY wanted them to before they came out. In fact, I was holding out for them until I saw Flipboard for the iPad, and then I knew I had to get an iPad :P

But yeah, like I said, some people will LOVE a Xoom or another variant of Android tablet, and some will hate it. Same goes for the iPad.

Android paid applications available in SA
Jan Vermeulen
| 12 May, 2011

South Africans can finally buy and download paid-for applications from the Android Market

South African Android users have reason to celebrate today with paid applications becoming available locally in Google's official Market for Android devices.

It was revealed last month that the paid Android Market was expected in the second quarter of 2011 and it was announced at Google IO yesterday that 99 additional countries would be receiving buyer support, of which South Africa would be one.

Before the evening was out South Africa's Android community had discovered that the ability to buy applications from the Android Market had already been enabled for users on local networks.

Google's announcement comes hot on the heels of Microsoft unveiling their intent to support a handful of countries for app creation and app commerce.

In addition to offering a host of countries access to the paid Android Market, Google also announced some new features for the service. These are:

New top app charts
Editor's choice section
Top developers get a special icon
Better related apps section
Trending apps chart

Users that aren't seeing paid applications in their Market yet should try clearing its settings and cache by finding Market in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications.

Thanks to Karl Fischer and Johan Els for the tip and to ZADroid for the tutotial on clearing the Market application's cache.
Finally! Just used it to purchase Beautiful Widgets. Bye bye CC...

So to the uninformed, how does one pay for said apps, with airtime/on one's contract, or with a credit card? Or are there other options?

From what I can tell, CC. I had linked my CC to Google Checkout (think it is checkout) and it went from there.

So the HTC Flyer is available for R6300. Am I the only one that thinks this is ridiculous? It's R6300 for a 7" Froyo based tablet that wants an $80 stylus. It sounds like crazy talk to me.

Samsung's 10.1 tab looks pretty good though...

DJV I know what you mean. Never mind that Samsung has a dual core 8.1 coming in June/July...
