Intel/AMD pci-e lanes

Post by StarBound »

The i7 really is a marvel of technology. Both the tripple channel and duel channel cpus shows great performance and with tripple channel bandwidth to spare. But lately I have been reading about the pci-e lanes and how they are spread over all the devices. If I recall correctly the socket 1155/1156 i7 adds 8 pci-e lanes while the p55/p67 boards has 16 pci-e lanes to itself and when you start using more than 1 pci-e device and/or usb3/sata6 your lanes are taxed even more.

So this is a question more to the pcf crew but other forum goers might also know. What is the number of pci-e lanes on the socket 1366? And how many lanes does the i7 9xx series add to this? Why don't they just design the boards with enough lanes to support duel/tripple/quad card setups without the need for extra lanes from the cpu? And what is AMDs take on this?
