Second hand value - PC

Post by MorneDJ »

Hi,

Considering to buy a PC, however do not have an idea of the real value. I intent on running Windows 7 64 on it, and use it for acoustic related work. Perhaps a game or two every now and then, but it will mainly be used for work purposes. The asking price for the components together are R4,050.

Case: Antec P180B case
PSU: Huntkey 750W PSU
GFX: 8800GTX 768mb with Thermalright cooler and 120mm fan
Ram: 4gb (2 x 2gb) OCZ Reaper DDR2 1200
CPU: Intel XEON X3220 Socket 775 Quad Core CPU with Zalman 7000 cooler
MB: Biostar Socket 775 Motherboard P35 chipset

I have a 500 GB to install, and DVD-Rs are cheap. No screen.

Some help would be appreciated

Regards

Morne

Not bad at all, a steal at anything below R4K I would think

Yeah, why a Xeon tho?
It's a really old model too, one of the first batch of Quad cores IIRC.
Looking at the RAM, fans and CPU it seems like whoever owned that rig was a serious OC'er. Xeons can take a bit more punishment than desktop CPU's so are popular with that crowd - but at stock speeds it would run just a bit faster than a Q6600.

If you are happy buying a second hand PC that has probably been over-clocked and stressed a bit in it's time, go for it!

Yeah, just OC the CPU to 3GHz.

I'd be wary because that sounds like an overclocking setup and the owner mightve been running it at high temps. So those components could a little tired. But I'm pretty sure you could build a pretty decent rig for the same price, maybe cheaper. Lga1156 with an i5 perhaps,i3 if you have to

What makes this a serious consideration is the P180 case, which is a brilliant case. But I will also price the new components. Other option would be to upgrade the ram in the laptop to 4 GB and try Windows 7 on that. Any recommendations on who I can approach in Pta to get a price ?It is an Acer Travelmate 6592.

It's a good deal, go for it unless you're able to fork out more $$ for a new rig. Nuff said I believe.
