Hi guys
Please can someone explain what is the difference between the above 2. I have done some research and to me they are the same thing,

Most times a VLAN is just different ports on the same switch that act as they are different switches. eg port 1 and 2 are win vlan10 and port 3 and 4 are in vlan20 and a machine plugged into port 1 can't talk to a machine on port 3.
More advanced is if you get into trunking, where you have 2 (or more) switches, and port 1 on switch A and port 1 on switch B are both in vlan10.
A LAN is just a dumb switch, like most cheap Dlink/netgear/linksys switches.
That is vlans in a few sentences. If you want more details, CCNA books explain the basics well.
