The E3 convention for 2011 will see a marked change in how attendees gain entrance to the trade show. In an attempt to cut down on tickets that have been sold on or forged; E3’s organisers will be introducing a barcode system which will result in media/exhibitor passes being issued at the door

Still don't see why they can't have public entrance days? it would generate huge sales and marketing hype.

The general public can't boycott it if they're not allowed in in the first place. I'm not sure how the average person would go about ignoring coverage of the event either.

E3 might not be what is used to be but it is still the biggest trade show for this industry.
The first day of Rage is generally considered the media day. Journalists run to and fro meeting up with industry contacts and going to press conference in the media rooms.
The thing with E3 is that its format is not really for public consumption. Press events are held in different locations in LA and are a once off affair, the big important industry players like Blizzard etc do not have stands, they have concert halls and then they throw all their effort into WOWing a crowd of journalists.
