Greatest PC games of all time.

Post by D3PART3D »

One of the things I want to do this year is play the timeless classics, the masterpieces. Let's compile a list! I hope this isn't too similar to Siemens' threads, I have a different purpose here.
  • Half-Life 1 & 2
  • System Shock 2
  • Deus Ex
  • Crysis
  • F.E.A.R.
  • Star Craft
  • Diablo I & II
  • Quake I, II & III
I'm not exactly sure which criteria we should use for this. Ideas? I haven't been gaming for as long as some of you older folk so I'm not going to be very useful.

Where can I buy System Shock? :P

Doom got FPS titles rolling, Quake made them 3D, Half-life made them more focused with a story.

Before Diablo there was Ultima.

Warcraft and Command & Conquer were some of the better RTS games but Dune 2 was before that.

Well not by my choice but Counter Strike and Warcraft3 has managed to do something that no other game has done.
Even though these two games are probably the most pirated they have been around for some time and it's usually these 2 games that lures people into gaming. By attending a lan and trying out CS or w3 people decide to buy systems for themselves(which down the line supports the growth of technology in a way) and other games to run on these systems(thus supporting the developers and the growth of gaming). I'd actually say a lot of what we see today is thanks to these two games. THis process is still happening today at lans although it's now more CoD than CS.
CS and W3 lured me and a large number of my friends into gaming.

Now haters gonna hate. I know. I hate CS just as much. It still doesn't change the facts. So in a sense these two games are some of the greatest.

I think on a global level those would be considered the greatest if you look at how it shaped the industry. But saying something is the greatest mostly have a personal opinion.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles ...BEST ...GAME ...EVER!!! 15 years later I am still playing it. My brother did a "tribute" run on the wii with it. Finished the game 2 minutes before the end of 2010 and then finished it for good measure as the first game in 2011 :P Maybe it should become a ritual.

Actually Wolfenstein 3D was released a year before doom, and was the first FPS game....so technically speaking it helped to popularize the genre.....

I know. I played wolfenstein because the home pc couldnt run doom. It was a 286 still. As far as wolf 3d vs doom the reason behind it was that doom made the bigger impact. Wolf 3d wasnt the first fps either. I think Rise of the Triad was before wolf 3d.

Nope MIDI Maze 1987 for atari was sort of the first one or the first to adopt the type of game play, Rise of the Triad was released in 1994......

Yes, Warcraft did it first, but SC did it best. Both have a high replay value tho...

The C&C franchise, while very good, was never on par with Blizzards RTS offerings. And for me the replay value was just never there, the only C&C game I ever went back to after completing it once was Generals, and that was because it had decent multiplayer...

I'll leave the rabble to dux it out over what the best FPS to play again is...

I remember Rise of the Triad - loved that game. Wolfenstein, Doom etc were all fantastic. Still have to say that no game has kept me going as long as Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion.

Escape from Butcher Bay gets mentioned a lot, and it's currently going for R35 on Steam.

The Myst series. Still looking for Myst 3 and Uru before I can continue.
MDK
Commandos
Dark Reign
Thief
Hitman
Operation Flashpoint
Beyond Good and Evil
Splinter Cell
CS might have made it main stream but I think Hidden & Dangerous (1&2) started it.
Also if you can get your hands on two interesting titles, Project Eden and The Nomad Soul.
Nice list :) There are a few titles there I've never heard of before, which seem to be worth further investigation. Thief and Operation Flashpoint are two I'll definitely be playing in the near future, thanks for the reminder!

The best rpg would have to be any of the Elder scrolls, especially Morrowind. That game was awesome and crazy. No other games I have played could match Morrowind in madness and fun. i can proudly say I completed every single quest!
