Ja, not great. A lot of people were hoping for performance close to that of the GTX580, but it wasn't to be. They will probably kick bottom in crossfire though, just as the 6870 does.

I do hear something about an imminent unveiling of a next gen AMD GPU within the next month or so. I'll check.

I suppose that would be the 6990.

That too, but I thought a brand new architecture was coming. I was mistaken though, what I saw was the mid to low range 6000 series cards.

I doubt they would have released a new range so soon... wouldn't make any sense.

Benchmarks shows mixed results. On some benchies the 6970 beats the 5870 while others its the other way around. Looking at the pricing it might be better considering a GTX580. On the other hand the 580 is a furnace in a plastic casing so you might go for something less lock-up proof.

From a benchmark perspective mixed with pricing the cards you would go for is:
5870 - priced at around R3500-R4000
6870 - priced at around R2500

I don't see why you would want to go for other cards unless you have money to blow.

If that's your opinion on the 580, what did you have to say on the 480?

Holy mother of batman! that is some serious ignorance you have there! the 480's are not as hot as one would be lead to believe by the reviews. with a good fan profile setup a normal 480 will never reach 70deg! even OC'd to 933mhz core 1100 mem i have not gotten over 70deg on the 480GTX! and with the 580GTX being a optimized 480GTX running cooler with higher overclocking ability i cannot see how the 580 can even possible reach the same temp as the 480. I mean average overclocks on the 480 are about 910mhz and on the 580 it is more around the 950mhz mark while still staying within the 70deg zone.

I take it you have. This makes me happy that some appreciates the fact that I nearly melted a GTX580. :)

Lets just say that I would not disable the throttling if I owned one of those cards

Then what is the point? Your basicly crippling the card so it can stay on living. i7 and throttling goes in hand in hand because if its not under load it reduces power consumption and produces less heat. Under load it scales up and doesnt put itself on the path of self destruction doing so. I'll admit I didnt read the article in its entirety but I kept a look out for the part that you mentioned about not being able to perform as it should.

Yeah, our ambient temps in Namibia are also quite high...

Using the aircon in my office can make about 10 degrees difference on my CPU and GPU temps just on idle.

The Twin Frozer version of the 580 GTX might be worth a look at. Or maybe they should start working on a Quad frozer that also covers the top of the card.

Yes it is , but maybe some water cooling might be a better idea with the 580's blistering temp's in mind

I was more referring to the Twin Frozr in general. I was going to get the 460 Hawk from msi, but now I think I'll wait until the GTX 560 Twin Frozr comes along.

Thats the 480GTX Lightning. Its a whole other kind of monster! Custom PCB, binned cores, unlocked voltage control. The past few years MSi have been the best when it comes to raw GPU MHZ on their lightning cards. The 275GTX Lightning is still the best clocking 200GT ever made.

Call me old fashion but i love the vanilla design on most cards - theres something slick about it...like the HD2900XT back in the day & not to mention the 8800 Ultra, but i guess the stock coolers cant compete with the after market designs @ all,but thats jus me :-)
