Re: All things iPad (and, more generally, Apple)
So, my girlfriend got me an iPad for Christmas . In fact, I'm sitting in a Starbucks in Toronto right now posting from it.
I've been using it for about a week now, and I've gotta say, this thing is amazing. It's worth buying an iPad just for Flipboard and Twitter's iPad app. Those two apps alone make it worth the purchase.
Battery life is incredible, the screen is beautiful, and I'm really impressed by how polished and beautiful iOS is.
The apps available are also far superior to what's available on the android platform, that's for sure. For example: My girlfriend and I love scrabble, so we both launch the scrabble app on our own respective iPads, and we can play against each other in the same game on two separate iPads. It's pointless if we're in the same room, but if we're in different rooms, or even on different floors of the house like we were last night, it's freaking awesome.
One annoyance is that there are far more paid apps in the Apple app store than there are in the Android Market. The apps are also a little more costly on the apple platform.
Overall, I freaking love this thing. For someone that does a lot of news reading and RSS like myself, it's absolutely incredible.

Really It's worth paying whatever the iPad costs in Canadian dollars for it's twitter app and a social network site aggregatorDAE_JA_VOO wrote:It's worth buying an iPad just for Flipboard and Twitter's iPad app. Those two apps alone make it worth the purchase.
You're either the worlds worst salesman, or you really know what appeals to the iPad's target market
Your saving grace was that you threw in a quick mention about easy reading and RSS feeds there at the end - almost like an afterthought.
Since most iPad users are incapable of reading anything longer than 120 characters, I don't blame you

+1 I used a iPad this Christmas as well and to use it for RSS feeds and normal reading is awesome! And I am seriously thinking of getting one but I think I would prefer a Android version . BTW A very nice RSS reader for all platforms:jamin_za wrote:Really It's worth paying whatever the iPad costs in Canadian dollars for it's twitter app and a social network site aggregatorDAE_JA_VOO wrote:It's worth buying an iPad just for Flipboard and Twitter's iPad app. Those two apps alone make it worth the purchase.

I think I will wait awhile (like next Christmas ) for a Android tablet. I know Apple is brilliant in a lot of areas however I wont support them right now and it will take a lot for me to support them later on...

RSS was the biggest reason I wanted an iPad. I'm a big fan of RSS, so getting a fantastic news reading experience is what I'm after, and the iPad is most certainly the best news reading experience I've ever had. It's great for games and all that other time wasting junk too, but RSS... *drool*

SourceApple Market Capitalization Tops $300B, Cupertino Adds $6B Overnight
We all may have started 2011 with a New Year’s resolution, but Apple seems to have found the best way to get started on the right foot. The Cupertino, Calif. company gained $6 billion in value on the first business day of 2011, pushing the iPhone maker to a market capitalization of $302.32 billion.
Monday, investors rewarded Apple for its long string of popular electronic gadgets with a 2 percent jump in the stock’s price at $329.57 per share. If breathing down the neck of Exxon, history’s most profitable company isn’t enough, there’s even better ahead for Apple, if you believe Wall Street analysts.
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster Monday told investors he sees Apple’s share price hitting $438 by year’s end – without unveiling another monster hit, like the iPad or the iPhone 4. Instead, the analyst sees a profitable year from the iPad 2 and a CDMA iPhone, both expected to be introduced in early 2011 and both seen as expanding the market for Cupertino’s devices.
In December, MarketWatch named Apple’s Steve Jobs “CEO of the Decade,” saying he was responsible for “the greatest comeback story of all time.” This just two months after Apple passed Microsoft in terms of company worth.
Apple is expected to release quarterly revenue figures later this month.

No matter what I do - my iTunes refuses to recognise my ipod. Is there a way of formatting the ipod without destroying anything?

Double negative? You want to format, but not remove anything?Tribble wrote:No matter what I do - my iTunes refuses to recognise my ipod. Is there a way of formatting the ipod without destroying anything?
Get the latest iTunes as well as searching for the latest USB drivers for the ipod. You can then try do a restore in itunes, that will update the firmware and format the ipod clean n clear.

I am doing that now. And no - I did not mean not destroying the files - I meant not destroying the player.

Steve Jobs On Medical Leave
I don't think he'll be back this time, his health isn't well.
They seem to already be preparing for Tim Cook to take over permanently, but here's hoping Steve makes a recovery.
SourceSteve Jobs is taking a medical leave of absence and handing day-to-day control of Apple over to Tim Cook.
Jobs sent the following message to staff this morning:
Team,
At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health. I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.
I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for all of Apple’s day to day operations. I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011.
I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy.

The iPad Will Get Playboy In March

"Playboy boss Hugh Hefner has confirmed that — despite Steve Jobs' protestations that Apple is pure and Android is for porn — an app for browsing uncensored back issues of Playboy is to launch later this year on the iPad. The news, which is likely to generate significantly more buzz for Apple's popular tablet as a publishing device than Rupert Murdoch's delayed digital newspaper The Daily, comes courtesy of Hefner's Twitter stream, in which he proclaimed: 'Big news! Playboy — both old & new — will be available on [the] iPad beginning in March.'"

Re: All things iPad (and, more generally, Apple)
Ryan, Apple may be better off for it, Steve Jobs has been some fantastic products but he's also per some really lousy ones through. The previous shuffle being a prime candidate. Being in charge of a company for too long can actually be detrimental to its well being.
Re: All things iPad (and, more generally, Apple)
Yeah Apple will continue. Since his return though he has completely turned the company around from the verge of bankruptcy during the mid 90's. Apple is a completely changed company because of him so his leaving won't have too much of an impact on the products they put out, especially with Jonny Ive still at design and development...

So I installed iTunes so that I can buy music online. The thing is, the iStore only seems to show aps. Am I stupid or is it just not possible to buy music through iTunes in SA?

I buy almost all my music on iTunes. Do you have an SA or a US iTunes account? US is the way to go. For some reason SA accounts have basically zero content available to them...

Thanks man. Didn't realize I had to create an account first.

Cool man, let me know if you need any help with the US account thing, cos you can't create one with an SA credit card, so you have to create the account and then use iTunes gift vouchers that you purchase and load in iTunes, all online.
It's an extra step, but very much worth it. The SA store literally has bugger all compared to the UK and US ones, be it music, apps, books, movies...

So, the iPad was released in SA today! You can pick up a 16GB Wifi iPad for R4399! That's a great price, considering I just bought one in Canada for only 200 bucks cheaper. So, did any of you pick one up?

Re: All things iPad (and, more generally, Apple)
What a stupid release date...
If this was released in December when I still had my Christmas bonus to throw away this would have been on my list. Sorry just seems like a silly release to me...
Glad to see we are getting newer tech faster than previously.

Re: All things iPad (and, more generally, Apple)
Waiting for the iPad 2 announcement before I decide which to buy. It seems the iPad 3 will be the worthy upgrade though, with the "retina" display and such things, so I might pick up an original iPad now for cheap and then get a 3 next year...
