The company that helped develop Microsoft’s Kinect technology, PrimeSense, has released open-source drivers for the Kinect sensor and a few other applications besides. PrimeSense has also launched the OpenNI organisation, “an industry-led, not-for-profit organization formed to certify and promote the compatibility and interoperability of Natural Interaction (NI) devices, applications and middleware”

It's a trap!
Once developement takes hold and open sourcers fix all the bugs M$ releases a firmware update that renders all "non-official" microsoft developement ventures useless.
But maybe the sooner they get it out of the way and open up an open source NI device design that allows pc and ps3 to use something similar but different.
