Your Game of the year

Post by StarBound »

The games I bought/played:

Sonic the hedgehog 4
Deathspank
Need for speed hot pursuit
Call of Duty Black Ops
Singularity
Bioshock 2
Red Dead Redemption
Super Mario Galaxy 2
BlazBlue
Goldeneye 007
Final Fantasy 13
Starcraft 2
Castlevania Lords of Shadow
Halo Reach
World of Warcraft Cataclysm (on pre-order for 7 Dec)

The year is nearly coming to a close and all of the above are games that I have played and some that I am still playing. So getting down to it here are how I am lying down the games:

Best Strategy:
Starcraft 2. Dont have to say anything. It is the best RTS in ages and the detail that has is still surprising me. All these months down the line and there are still things I havent seen.

Best First person shooter:
Singularity.
Goldeneye was a good remake and revisit of the old N64 title. The game could have been so much more if only the wii was a high def system. Black Ops is good but comes down to being the same old, same old formula. Not impressing but will keep you busy for a good long time. Halo Reach just did not manage to grab me at all. Bioshock 2 was really just a revisit to Rapture. Thinly spread cracker anyone?
Singularity has a standard story. Your a US guy that gets sucked into a time vortex, changes history, screws up the future and then travels along trying to fix it. The game is a standard fps with some interesting moments. Graphicly it has some glitches but the gameplay is always streight forward with level design making you take some paths away from heading directly to your next objective. This cuts the linear game to feel like your just just deviating from a path and is welcomed in games that throws you into a 1 way alley. Also no quest/town hub. Bonus point!

Worst game:
Final Fantasy 13
When your game feels like a chore to play and you only press 1 button through the entire game you know it's a lost cause. Beautiful stunning graphics paired with a bad story, bad voice acting, a auto attack combat system, a fully luck based outcome and 30min or more of the same scenery to get to the next part this game wins worst game of the year award. Now if only it was as bugged as Sonic the hedgehog (that terrible 3d one) it could have been contender for the worst game ever award.

Returning Classics:
Sonic the hedgehog 4 is a very welcomed game. After year and years of torture Sonic is finally back in platform and the way he should be. It's just too bad that a week after release fans showed they can do better.
Castlevania has the name but not much else. It is a God of War clone but it looks stunning.
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. The game reminds me of Burnout whenever I play the police sections while the racer parts reminds me of the first 3 need for speed games. A good come back for a series that lost itself in diversity and dilution.

Game of the year:
World of Warcraft Cataclysm
Arthas is dead. The lich king is no more. I should have stopped my subscription months ago. But I didnt. And the new content patches arrived. If it wasnt that the shattering happened this past week I wouldnt even have placed the game on the list. But it happened. And come 7 december WoW will add more of the same for high level characters to be enjoyed and frustrated at.
Blizzard... you bastards!

Fifa 11 for best sports game of the year

I was always a PES fan (for the last 6 or 7 years now) however this time around, I just far preferred Fifa 11 to PES2011....I still cant believe I'm saying that

meh... the only game the piqued my interest in 2010 was first "released" in 2009... the rest have been re-runs or cruddy console ports...

how bad is it that i can't recall a single, worthwhile, game being released this year... :/

MoH was good, but BO was better. I enjoyed Mass Effect 2 a lot as well.

No, Call of Duty Black ops is the game of the year.

Dragon age is not as good as people say it is.

@hamin: starcraft 2 hardly qualifies as a game...

when >80% of the content is playing against other humans, it's a tennis ball or, possibly, a shuttlecock...

that the price point is somewhere around R560 is just pressing the point home.. starcraft fans are closet console gamers... sad, but true....

@THE_STIG: nor is any CoD game post CoD2... so...

No its the story where you called a game belonging to a genre that exists predominantly on PC, and that was designed exclusively for the PC a console port.

Spelling rubbish wrong did not help either

For all I care they can charge R580 for Diablo III. At least Diablo has more content than SC2. SC2 is a play once put down kind of game. Once finished you have no real desire to keep playing it unless you are really, and I do stress really, big lan fan

++ i have no problem paying for actual content...

SC2, without MP, is an empty husk - development costs my hairy buttocks. i'm thinking SC2 is being used to recoup costs for BattleNet 2.0....

If you had even played SC2 you would realise the game does not even support LAN play :P
And as for playability, with a very large creative and talented community creating amazing custom maps and all the various forms of multilpayer available this game offers more playability than anything else out there right now.

Diablo is for social recluses.

Good thing it has multiplayer then.
