brainstorming for wireless network idea
Hey guys I live in an estate and I wanna start up a wireless network. I'll get uncapped adsl and provide that to the 26 houses wirelessly, through a server. I'm not sure if 1 router can cover the area of the estate.
And I'll have multimedia on the hard drives that they can access wirelessly, like watch a few movies at night etc.
But I'm not sure if the router can deal with that kinda demand, streaming various movies to different houses?
So if wireless can't work I'll have to set up a wired network.
Kinda bush job digging lil trenches for the cabling. Now what kinda cabling would be good, what kinda topology,iv been thinking a start topology and getting a switch. But I'm not sure if twisted pair cabling will go the distance I need before needing to boost it with a hub.
So I was thinking fibre optics?
PS this is a wild idea, just brainstorming at the moment:)

It's a bad idea unless they pay you a monthly fee
And expect calls at 11pm from grumpy people that want to download High School Musical
Otherwise I'd say install multiple wireless routers but set them up as access points, that way you won't need heavy duty antennas. You didn't mention how far apart the homes are from each other

i'd use microwave myself.. preferably directional dishes to take care of.... trouble "shooting"...
fibre optic cable in proper trenches or you'll be balling before the month is out :/
wireless is pants and still has to breach the sustained gigabit speed barrier...

I'm not sure if 1 router can cover the area of the estate. It can if everyone is willing to have an antenna on their roof...
And I'll have multimedia on the hard drives that they can access wirelessly, like watch a few movies at night etc. But wouldn't this be illegal? (I am such a hypocrite)
But I'm not sure if the router can deal with that kinda demand, streaming various movies to different houses? I think you'll need 802.11n at least to support that amount of people. But the theoretical speed for that is roughly 500-600mbps. I just don't think that'll cut it.
So if wireless can't work I'll have to set up a wired network. Seriously, why??? Why the hassle?
But I'm not sure if twisted pair cabling will go the distance I need before needing to boost it with a hub. UTP cables can reach about 100m before you need a hub, but I think you'll still suffer some considerable packet loss by then.
So I was thinking fibre optics? Bloody expensive.

Re: brainstorming for wireless network idea
I'll hook up wireless access points points under the eaves of some houses, try get the whole area covered...
But will wireless be able to handle this much data? I'll make movies read only. Wild night last night guys. Wild ideas... Hunters Dry makes me do these things...

Re: brainstorming for wireless network idea
For fast enough ADSL you can bridge connectors, i.e. 4mbps + 4mbps + 4mbps + 4mbps = 16mbps, but you'll have to pay for four 4mbps lines. That will give them at worst 615384 bps each. A 512 uncapped line and data from MWEB will cost them R600pm, so you can't charge them more than that. 4mbps line and data from MWEB is R899, so x4 = R3600. So if you rope in all of them @ R600pm, you'll be getting R12000 pm profit. Problem is these lines only allow one connection at a time AFAIK, so you'll have to go for business ADSL.
With Business ADSL it will cost you R2359 per line, x4 = R9436pm. So with that you'll make R6164pm.
With four connections you can split the wireless requirements in 4 as well.

Re: brainstorming for wireless network idea
Thanks everyone for your advice, good ideas!! But now are these ideas possible?? I mean imagine a rainy night and all 27 residents want to watch a movie.
Can the routers handle so much info at a time?

Re: brainstorming for wireless network idea
Apart from the ethics behind providing 25 people with movies that you haven't paid for, It's doable.
But as the others have said, wireless won't work. You need a or b for outdoors, not n. So bye bye speeds

What is the data rate of a DVD quality movie?

Re: brainstorming for wireless network idea
A typical DVD movie that lasts 90 minutes and weights in at 4GB would require a constant throughput of 750KB/s to be watchable.KALSTER wrote:What is the data rate of a DVD quality movie?
Your typical AVI rip of this movie would need about 150KB/s

Re: brainstorming for wireless network idea
If you want that kind of speed you will have to look at something like this -> http://www.infinetwireless.com/products/infiman-2x2 . 240MBps per base station, and upto 35mb per client. Media streaming etc will work fine at those speeds (that 240 is true speed, not the lab test 300 of 802.11n).
