Yes my one 8800GT died thanks to SC2 and its burn-my-gpu function. So my SLI setup is no more ...

Re: Tales from the (PCF) crypt
I searched the forums for this but I have no time to check the search results since Nab is getting married later today and I have to be present, suitably attired. Send him well wishes and things if you haven't already.
On with the show...
I found this yesterday and it struck me as a very interesting experiment (don't even ask what I was searching for). If it has been posted before, let me know. A thread not for the easily offended is the likeliest spot for this to have turned up but time is a factor for me today. 502 pages and counting.

(My) sourceStart with a cage containing five monkeys. Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana.
As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all the other monkeys with cold water. After a while another monkey makes the attempt with same result, all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.
Now, put the cold water away. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him. After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs he will be assaulted.
Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm.
Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs he is attacked. Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.
After replacing all of the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not?
Because as far as they know that is the way it has always been done around here.

That's a great website Drakonis! Not sure if the experiment is real, but it does make a good point.

Re: Tales from the (PCF) crypt
From what I understand the experiment is theoretical but I do have this strange urge to get hold of a bunch of monkeys and see if it would actually work out that way.

Re: Tales from the (PCF) crypt
Why??? How can you make such a claim?Pretty soon when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.
Bollocks. Why on earth would that happen? Besides them not liking the newcomer. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him.
This is a flawed theory with way, way too many assumptions.

Bwahahahahahahahha! I would like to see this play out in real life, and I have a weird hunch that there might actually be more to this than just theory...

Re: Tales from the (PCF) crypt
The theory is a rather feasible look at group behaviour and it could function as an analogy of human traditions. Replacing the monkeys who are aware of the punishment for trying to reach the banana one by one could condition the newcomers to 'go along with the group', mimicking the original group and participating in punishment avoidance. Once all of the original monkeys have been replaced the group behavior remains. Only the reason for it has been lost. If you think in terms of human traditions being passed down through generations, the same rules could apply.Bladerunner wrote:Bollocks. Why on earth would that happen? This is a flawed theory with way, way too many assumptions.
- tradition originators have a specific reason for their behavior i.e. covering their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing during the Black Plague because it seems to transmit illness, death (I'm making this example up to illustrate/because I'm too lazy to do the research)
- children follow suit because of entrenched behaviour, mimicry, parents beat them if they don't, etc.
- several generations down the line people still cover their mouths while coughing/sneezing but the original reason for it has been lost. Nobody using the gesture thinks about why they do, it is just how things are done. (again, no factual basis for this illustration but why do people do that... or any one of thousands of things we do without thinking about the reasons behind it)
People still say 'Bless you' when someone else sneezes and that is an automatic response that springs from this example. How many people consider that the response is related to Middle Ages superstitions about demons making you drop dead without warning?
There is an easy way to put the monkey theory to rest however. Anyone got twelve monkeys lying around? And a hose-pipe?

KB I have some good news and some bad news for you...
Good News: You have stalkers! This means you are a celebrity! Have fun with your new status quo.
Bad News: They are male.
What this means is that instead of having this really hot chick bothering you all the time you will now have hot and bothered guys fumbling for you now.
