Slow ADSL download speed
Hey
I recently upgraded to a 4mb line, websites are loading much faster and its great, Speed test shows about 3.45 download speed, however when i download* anything else I only get speed of up to 42KB/sec, which was about what I was getting on my 512 line. OH and Telkom is my ISP.
I've tried downloading from several different sites, such as download.com or downloading from youtube, just basic things like utilities etc. no torrents, newsservers or the likes of rapidshare, yet its all so slow.

Any advice?

Re: Slow ADSL download speed
Are you just downloading directly through IE/FF? No download manager? Getting the same speeds in different browsers?

Re: Slow ADSL download speed
the line is shaped... is this slow download issue during the day, or early morning? (24h00->05h00)
contention is also an issue if it's one of those 'uncapped' options..

Re: Slow ADSL download speed
It does seem a bit slow for a 4mb line?
I am also on Telkom ISP via Hetzner.
As Rusty says.
Re: Slow ADSL download speed
Yep downloading directly through the browser, have tried FF and IE but similiar results.Stuart wrote:Are you just downloading directly through IE/FF? No download manager? Getting the same speeds in different browsers?
Its a shaped account from Telkom, but when I had a 512 line it was averaging a little higher and probably more consistent than it is now in terms of download speeds. Its pretty much the same download speed whether night or day, haven't tried early morning.rustypup wrote:the line is shaped... is this slow download issue during the day, or early morning? Re: Slow ADSL download speed
log a call with hellkom... if this is area specific they should at least be able to let you know when sorted.
did you upgrade recently?

Re: Slow ADSL download speed
gave Telkom a call they made me do a couple of speed tests which gave some erratic results, so they have logged a customer fault and we will see what happens. My speeds are now averaging about 25KB/s so its probably a Telkom problem although I don't see why speedtest and other give such a high line speed and then my downloads fail.
Yep several times, but nope its gotten even slow now.KALSTER wrote:Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Re: Slow ADSL download speed
Just an update, so after loads and loads of calls to Telkom and doing several speed tests they say something on my side is the problem. Just to confirm is a speedtest of 0.8mb to and international server like London normal, and if it isnt what should it be
