HD 5770 or HD5830??

Post by Slimshaedy »

Howzit guys
I'm looking at getting a new GPU for around R2500 but I can't pick between the 5770 and the 5830. I've read a few forums and they say different things!
I understand the 5770 has a 128 bit memory bus and the 5830 has 256. but I want a HD5770 sapphire vaporX. So surely I can overclock it quite a lot to beat the standard 5830?
Have I maybe missed a good card? What's the besty card to get on a budget of R2500??
Thanks a lot

I would go for 5830. You will get almost double the memory bandwith and will easily be able to OC to the 5770's core and memory clocks. It is a little more power hungry, but would be the better choice.

Oh, and welcome to the forums! Intro's are heeeere...

If you shop around you can get a Geforce GTX460 for around that price, maybe even cheaper, with similiar performance to the 5830.

Welcome,

Currently i own a 5770 and the performance of the 5830 is closer to the 5770 than 5850. I am a ATi Fan boy *yeah* but i dont like that 5830 gap filling card.
but if you go with a 5850 which is almost in you budged you wont regret it! If you cant, you can save a lot of money by going for the dirt cheap 5770 !

EDIT: What is your current system specs?

If you can rather go for a 460GTX. They are around R2500 for the 192bit 768mb version and R3000 for the 256bit 1gb version which is the better option. Else maybe you should just go with the 5770.

You can always try www.tomshardware.com and look at the graphics chart. I have a 5870 so I can tell you now that if you go for a 5870 you will not be disappointed. You will be broke however.

Never seen a 5850 for R2800! Anyway I think I should mention that I'm buying a samsung 23 inch LED so I'll be running games on 1920 x 1080 res.
Apparently the 5770 struggles on high res? And has anyone heard anything about that monitor? Good or bad?

Ok I just had a look at a gtx 460 1gb. For 2700 and some change. They say its cooler, quieter, has more oc headroom and is generally 15 - 30 % faster than the 5830. So it looks like I'll be going with that card. Anyone heard something bad about it?

Yeah, definitely. If you are willing to spend around R2700 on a GTX460, then you should definitely ditch that for an Ati 5850 rather.

I spoke to a friend last night,he convinced me to just spend a lil extra cash and get a 5850.
I've seen a sapphire 5850 game edition for R3200. Has anyone seen it cheaper? I normally look on prophecy.co.za
Any other good sites?

Yes and no.

Most cards use the reference cooler meaning they are the same in most cases and sometimes the differences are negligible. Other times you get that manufacturers add a custom cooler and higher clock speeds that makes a difference in performance.

Well sapphire is the best of the manufacturers hey? Judging by the price. A lot of manufacturers make the same card
Without adding aftermarket parts or anything. I just thought its maybe a question of quality? Didn't know manufacturers change specs

Sapphires Vapor-X or Toxic edition cards have other coolers on them that works better than reference. MSI had twinforzer now known as lighting or thunder I believe thats also different.

I dont know your preference but looking at the 460gtx and the 5850 I would say check and make your own figures. As far as I know the 460gtx is around R3000 for the 1gb 256-bit version and the radeon 5850 is around R3500, R4000 if you go for the sapphire vapor-x/toxic editions. But that's cape town prices. Jhb is R300-R500 cheaper.

I dont want to sound like an nvidia fanboy but looking at some benchmarks and taking price into account if your under tight budget the 460gtx might be your best bet. Just bare inmind what you can afford and get the best product at the price point.

I'm looking at getting a sapphire 5850 second hand. Stil under warranty for a good price.
Think its best if I run gpu Z on it and test its temperature? Anything else I should worry about on a second hand card?
I was looking at the 460 gtx but then I thought why not spend the extra cash and get a really good card.
All the reviews can't say enough about the card... Including pc format
