Android only: The SMS messaging app included with standard Android phones is decent, but it could do so much more to make texting easy. ChompSMS does those things, including quick replies from home or lock screens, a clever widget, and more.

Android phones allow users to grab apps outside the official Market, but it usually involves either USB transfer or some tricking browser navigation. Lifehacker reader cinnamonster points out the smarter solution—use the Dropbox file syncing app to grab installers.

Hello,

I was wondering.

Is there any app, besides Google Maps, that I could use for the GPS?

I'm looking for voice guiding here!

Tonight is Desire night. I'm rereading this entire thread, and rooting!

Yeah, there's one called CoPilot, and another, but I forget it's name...

Did you root? :D

I think that the updates check where you're at and apply if necessary. Doesn't matter, though. If you're a root user, you'll have some amazing ROMs very soon if the updates start rolling out today!

Anyway, have any of you tried [ROM-FroYo AOSP] OpenDesire v2.3a? I'm busy downloading it now. It's greatly geared towards performance and battery life. It's a 67MB ROM! That's like half the usual size. I'm really amped to give this one a go.

Yeah wait fort rooted versions rather. I'm on OD 2.3a, great ROM! I had issues with battery drain overnight but I think its a specific app or MOD so busy testing further.

Awesome battery stat widget is battstatt, text based, looks cool!

If you guys have issues with apps loading to 100% and not installing, go to Applications and force close Market then clear all data and it should be fine then...

Yeah, I'm a battstat user myself! LOVE! You can get a clock that's the same, too. I forget it's name. I think it's tajm or something. I'll tell you just now.

Cool, ROM downloaded, and I've just made some little mods of my own quickly (removed stuff, added stuff :P ). About to flash :)

EDIT: Hmmm. This flashing process isn't going very well. Phone's stuck on the HTC boot screen :P

Fixed it 5 million years ago Anakha :P

Man, I totally forgot that this ROM doesn't have Sense. Gosh, I HATE this dialer. Just added HTC Dialer to the ROM. I'm SO sure it's not going to work... but hey, worth a shot, right? :P

Let us know how it breaks, it will be interesting to know :P.

Totally failed. It's as if the app isn't even in there.

Man, I can;t work on a Sense-less ROM :( Back to the last one. Thank goodness I did a nandroid backup just before I flashed :P

And I really don't like sense, that lock screen is horrid compared to stock Android. The only thing I like is the dialer buy easily got past that... Might switch back too though if I don't win this battery life battle on OpenDesire.

Yeah it is Tajm, using that too, I love the look of these text based widgets... :-)

You know that you can get out of using that crappy sense slider by using WidgetLocker? Widgetlocker is an app that allows you to throw widgets on your lock screen, but you can keep it limited to only using the Android style sliders :D

Guys, I've just read this article about tasker.

I'm SERIOUSLY tempted to buy it. Anyone here using it?

Yeah I know WidgetLocker but still prefer stock Android, feels more pure, and OpenDesire is hella fast! :-P

Read about Tasker, heard Gina mention it somewhere. Need to try it out though, looks great!

Man, tasker is pretty complicated hey. I downloaded the trial from the site last night, and I've gotten some pretty cool configs running, but much is to be learned :P

App steals private data from millions
San Fransisco - A free application that allowed users to change the background image on their Android smartphones actually stole private data from as many as 4 million people and transmitted it to China, security experts have revealed.

The so-called Jackeey Wallpaper app surreptitiously transmitted the phone's Internet browser history, mobile phone number, every single text message and voicemail password to a website based in Shenzhen, China.
Uh oh...

Hello,

Something I've noticed with the desire is you have to be incredibly steady with the phone to get a decent non blurred pic.

My hands are the worst when it comes to stability :/

Anyone know of an Cam app? Any advice?

I'll probably end up rooting sometime this weekend.

HTC has released a statement to let all those Europeans owning an unlocked HTC Desire know that they will start getting Android 2.2 this weekend. The update will have the latest version of HTC’s Sense UI, improved 720p video capture mode, iTunes integration, and its enhanced Caller ID. For American owners waiting for their cone of Froyo, this is just further proof that HTC has Android 2.2, complete with Sense, ready to rock… it’s only a matter of time now! We’ve got the full statement after the break.
The Android 2.2 (FroYo) update for HTC Desire will start rolling out across Europe this weekend. As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense. The update will provide 720p video capture, HTC’s App Share widget, as well as our enhanced HTC Caller ID, and improved multi-language keyboard. Also, through the update, HTC Sync will allow HTC Desire users to sync their music with iTunes.
HTC Desire users will be notified that the over-the-air update is available to download when their phone automatically checks for software updates. The update won’t delete any of the phone’s content. However, due to the size of the update, we would advise using a WiFi connection to download it wherever possible to avoid additional data charges.
This update will initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks’ time.
