Turbine, the studio responsible for the Lord of the Ring Online MMO, and Warner Brothers has stated that LotR O will become a free-to-play title later on this year. Turbine’s other MMO title based on the Dungeons and Dragons universe made a similar move in September last year

Actually it just became far more expensive. Anyone who played F2P games will tell you that the cash shop is far worse than a monthly fee. At higher levels it is needed to buy cash shop item to continue leveling/getting good gear/etc.
