Every now and again i see huge downloading happening on mt internet connection. even with all apps closed something is still downloading data.

All my apps i have set to not download any updates.

Is there software that can tell me which app is the culprit ?

netstat -b

go to the dos prompt and enter it!

Nertstat won't show you traffic

NetLimiter will, but it's not free

Sorry jamin - I thought it will help him to identify the programs responsible for connecting to the net when everything else is closed! I was not aware that he wants the specific traffic.

I'm not sure he wants that either

but a netstat is not always effective at showing what is running as it will give you a lot of processes with open connections, but not all of them are actually generating traffic - usually only one or two on the list will be actually sending/receiving data.
With Netlimter you can actually see in KB how much traffic any app is generating, which has proved very useful to me in the past...
You can even throttle specific apps to only use a certain amount of traffic...

But with the danger of looking like I want to hijack this thread, can spyware etc use one of your legit programs to access the net? My only open connections belong to firefox, outlook and skype. What worries me is that my outgoing traffic seems high, more than 10% of my total trafic. Or is this normal?

It does not work on Win 7 (Says so during installation, and quites!)

Thanks Guys, what i am looking for is to find out what app is using so much bandwidth, not what the traffic is. And i am using win 7 so the freebe version will not work. i have however still downloaded it for use on winxp machines.

Then maybe my suggesiton will help - it shows you what programs have open connections, so if you think everything is closed, you will be able to see the culprit using bandwith, as well as to which addresses it is connected.

It does log bandwidth used, click stats and the time-frame then on the apps to see what was using what bandwidth.
