The test I did here used Firefox 3.5.7. I'm downloading 3.6 now and will retest once it's finished, unless someone else wants to do it in the meantime? Otherwise I will admit I tried this test before and Opera was slow to do it, now it really is much faster.Code: Select all

I know FF isn't the "fastest", but seriously, what impact does that have on normal browsing?

It's a JS test, so sites that rely heavily on JS will work faster in Opera than they do in FF.shiv wrote:And how do all these benches help in when it comes down to just browsing?

HTML5 will be driving the web going forward, (gaming), so this is no small thing... it's one of the primary reasons behind all the major players waving their ePeen JS numbers at each other... they know that their uptake depends on their performance in this arena...

After installing, mine had Discover Local Opera Unite Users ticked. I've unticked that and I wonder if it's not the reason why the ports are still open? Even if it is a bug I'm not going back to the old version!rustypup wrote:ehh ... i'd really hold off encouraging folks to grab this build, (3296).

What is faster than the fastest?
Opera 10.60 in final version, faster and more secure than ever
Oslo, Norway – July 1, 2010
Today you can experience being the first on the Web in features, speed and innovation. Opera Software releases the final version of the 10.60 browser with several new features, more user security and enhanced stability and is now up to 50 percent faster than the previous version.
Join the movement
With more than 120 million active users surfing the Web on various Opera-powered devices, Opera seeks to provide the latest innovations to all web users. In Opera 10.60, the up and coming technologies forming the Web of tomorrow are already available.
Geolocation eases the work of putting you on the map by determining your position. To ensure your privacy, you have full control over when this feature is used. To showcase geolocation in action, Opera has created an interactive map to show real-time downloads of the Opera browser. Try it out here.
Opera is first to give you built-in video playback with the open WebM format that gives you optimized video right in the browser on all platforms. Other Opera features such as offline applications let you work using web-based applications, without Internet connectivity.
Go into overdrive
With the final version of Opera 10.60, the browser scores more than 50 percent faster than its predecessor – which was the fastest browser on Earth – in key benchmark tests. This translates into a faster browsing experience for users on modern JavaScript-heavy sites such as Gmail and Facebook.
Combined with its unique Opera Turbo functionality, Opera puts you one step ahead on the Web. Opera Turbo compresses the data going over your connection up to a factor of two or more, for those congested connections at cafés or a mobile connection at the summerhouse.
Other features included in Opera, such as mouse gestures, make you a more efficient user when browsing the Web and cuts down time spent on navigating between different webpages. Extensive built-in search functions give you quick and powerful searches both on the Web and in large webpages.
Stay secure, use Opera
Staying secure on the Web is easier than ever with the unsurpassed AVG-supported anti-fraud systems and phishing protection introduced in Opera 10.60. Live feeds supply fresh information on the latest web threats to the users and keep them in the know about potential malware, harm or scams. In certain regions, Yandex supplies user malware protection.
More improvements
Appcache: Use in-browser applications such as word processors and spreadsheets even without an Internet connection by storing the necessary files locally.
More search: Opera 10.60 includes several search engines for the user to choose for themselves. Opera has added the Bing search engine as one of the choices, in addition to the default Google search.
Search suggestions: With websites such as Wikipedia, get instant search suggestions to complement your search experience.
Improved design: New design features such as an improved Menu button and icon tabs make day-to-day use of Opera even faster and easier. With the Speed Dial, another Opera first, get to your favorite websites with just a single click of the mouse.
For more information and to download Opera please visit http://www.opera.com/browser/.

I like the marketing (goes to 11)
The stackable tabs are actually quite useful. For example, I am designing a website, and am editing the CSS. I have 3 or 4 pages of the site open, then I have procrastination tabs (this one, cracked.com and oddee.com), some others with image searches and other design resources. Thats at work.
At home I might have a couple of pages open relating to WoW, the aforementioned procrastination pages, and a couple of youtube channels I watch.
So yeah.. lots and lots of tabs.

Although I use JDownloader for my Youtube downloads I still grabbed this to check it out. How nice is it the way it makes the download button look like it's actually part of the Youtube page?Anakha56 wrote:Yay! Opera 11 works at work! Anywho...
Opera has released their new 11 Beta called Barracuda:
http://www.opera.com/press/releases/2011/03/17/
Time to go and install .Barracuda released from holding tank
Oslo, Norway - March 17, 2011
Opera Software today set loose the beta of its Opera 11.10 browser, codenamed "Barracuda". Barracuda inherits the streamlined design of its forebears, while its ongoing evolution has resulted in smarter features and faster performance. Download it today for Windows, Mac and Linux computers from www.opera.com/browser/next/.
Adaptations found in Barracuda:
More versatile Speed Dial
Speed Dial, which makes it easier and faster to access your favorite sites, has been one of Opera's most-loved features since its introduction four years ago. The number of Speed Dials is now unlimited, thanks to the new Speed Dial flow feature, which opens new Speed Dials dynamically as you add them. Customization options now include new layout choices, and an improved zoom slider lets you fit even 5-column layouts comfortably in your monitor.
See the new Speed Dial in action here:

Easier plug-ins
Barracudas dart through the water with ease. This Barracuda downloads the Flash plug-in with ease. When you visit a page that requires Flash, the Opera browser can now download the plug-in automatically and install it in the background—-a seamless, simple process.
More fun for web developers
Peer inside Barracuda and you will find new under-the-hood improvements. A new browser core not only makes Barracuda the fastest version of Opera, but also adds support for CSS3's multi-column layouts and gradients, the Web Open Font Format (WOFF) and Google's WebP image protocol.
What we say
"In 2011, Opera will have a relentless focus on desktop," said Jan Standal, VP of Desktop Products, Opera Software. "Barracuda is our first release in the new year and shows off some of our freshest ideas to make your browsing easier. If you are already an Opera fan, you will appreciate the polish we added to Speed Dial, a favorite feature for many millions of people who use Opera. If you've never tried Opera, maybe Speed Dial will become your favorite feature. And, the best part? It only gets better from here."

http://my.opera.com/chooseopera/blog/20 ... l-miss-youConfusing Opera and Oprah?
How in the world could you confuse Opera with Oprah (apparently this happens a lot)? One is a highly sophisticated, lean, mean web browsing machine...the other one isn't.
Opera Software ASA is a software company based in Oslo, Norway. We make great web browsers for a wide range of devices, from PCs and mobile phones to TVs. Oprah Winfrey hosted a well-known television show, last aired on 25 May, 2011. Opera Software is not affiliated with Oprah Winfrey in any way. We have, however, mistakenly received lots of mail from Oprah fans. As a tribute to Oprah and her fans, see our Best of Oprah mails to Opera.

Re: Opera: Stunning Browser
/Update time...
Opera has released version 11.50 and man am I loving the new look. rusty will rant about it being to "hip" and to "easy" to pick up and use, not like in his day "when you had to configure binary to get it to work" .

Some awesome speed dial extensions. Really loving the update but then again I am easily pleased . BTW for some fun facts visit the www.opera.com and see just how many downloads have occurred. I has interesting "Did you know..." tidbits...Hands-on: Opera 11.50's new "featherweight" interface packs a punch
Opera has released version 11.50 of its desktop Web browser. The significant update introduces Opera's new "featherweight" user interface and brings a number of other new features and performance improvements.
The major browser vendors have all been working to simplify their user interfaces and reduce the amount of functionality that is exposed in their default layouts. Opera took a big step in that direction with the 10.50 release last year, when they hid the menu bar by default. The new "featherweight" interface takes the existing streamlined layout and overhauls it with a much more consistent style.
In our review of 10.50 last year, we highlighted the strengths of the streamlined layout but had a lack of enthusiasm about the feel. The issue is that simplifying an interface by pulling out elements tends to detract from the seamlessness and sense of balance. To get it right, Opera really needed a more holistic redesign of the navigation and tab interface—with an approach that takes the new simplified layout into consideration from the start.
That seems to be exactly what the browser maker is doing with the "featherweight" project. The execution is great and the impact it has on the quality of the user interface in 11.50 is very positive. The Mac theme in particular has largely gotten past the "uncanny valley" effect that it exhibited in previous versions.
