Network Connection issues

Post by Mclaren »

I have a problem.

I am using my Samsung Omnia's internet sharing connection to cnnect to the net. I am also pluged into a Work network.

When i plug in the phone to download my mail i get a send and recieve error or if connect to my the Net i get a error. This goes away if disable the lan connection. there is no alternate connection through our lan.

I think, if the lan connection is enabled, my email and web software think it must use that connection to connect an not my phone connection. how do i let my pc know which lan connection it is to use for mail and internet ??

i m running XP Home, and office 2007.

Have you tried setting up your outlook properly? Like your SMTP/POP3 settings.

yeah, that is set correctly as my mail works if i

a: disconnect my lan cable
b: disable the lan connection

from what i gather, my pc is trying to access the net and mail servers via my lan cable and not my omnia connection. Both are listed as Lan or High Speed Internet connections. The omnia is not a modem it operates as a pc and has its own Internet sharing connection.

both connections are offering DNS services...

either disconnect the lan, or...
  • i) enable routing
ii) use this faq to route LAN traffic one way, and everything else the other...
iii) prepare for headaches should this go awry...

the "disconect the lan" option is what i am currently doing, this is not what i want to do.

I want to be able to access the net at the same time as i access application data on a server.

What is DNS..... :?: can it not be disabled on one connection or is it required for both connections to function correctly.

DNS - Domain Name System

I don't think you are able to do that. If you want both... then it won't work, you will have to go through one, or the other. Or try rusytypup's tips

DNS == Domain Name System.

At layer 3 of the OSI model, it is necessary that the source and destination logical addresses be specified (in other words, source and destination IP addresses). DNS is a lookup service, it resolves a host name (such as "forums.pcformat.co.za") into the IP address of the associated machine (in this case, 78.46.7.12), so that packets can be correctly addressed. In layman's terms, DNS is the Internet's phone book.

What he said... I know what it is, just don't make me try and explain it. :(

Thanks for the short verson Ron :D I tend to give the extreme layman version (due to end-users) and tend to forget them eventually

nah, i have a win 7 pc running on the same network. I use my xp pc for mail as its a notebook) and for 1 application that is not vista compliant, i use the win 7 pc for everything else.

If i connect my phone to the win 7 pc, only the win 7 pc can access the net/email, no other pc can connect through the omnia (even though i have shared the connection) thats why i have to plug the omnia into the XP pc.(this scenario is true for the xp pc too, ie cannot access the net on the win 7 pc via the omnia when it is plugged into the xp pc), dunno why, mailed samsung 6 months ago and still waiting for a reply on why the connection cannot be shared.
