vista + games

Post by geraldhum »

Hi Guys

My specs are:
2gb ram
2.2 ghz dual core
9400gt pci express graphics
Windows XP

The games i have are:
Assassins Creed
tomb raider underworld
cod4 and 5
far cry 2
need for speed undercover
crysis
ut 3
gothic 3
silent hill home coming
lefty4dead

I also have vista ultimate but not loaded.

My question is with my specs will all these games work on vista ultimate?
Is it worth while installing ultimate and using vista as my primary OS?

My main purpose of this pc is for gaming and internet

My system is pretty close to yours, except the graphics card (8800GT). I have the first 6 games in your list, and the only one I get problems with is Crysis - but only on very high settings AND after I've played for about an hour. The rest I can play without too much problems. :)

How is your gaming experience right now with XP with your current graphics card? And at what LOD do you run your games?

If you install Vista, make sure to install SP1 and 2, then you'll have MUCH less problems.

Just a note, if you plan to move to Vista based on DX10, it's not worth it... Crysis is easy to mod to enable the DX10 features (which looks nice), and Assassins Creed and Farcry2 doesn't look different really in DX10 mode.

I game under Vista with those sort of specs (if not lower - P4 3.2, 2GB Ram, X1950GT) and I can't say I've noticed any difference upgrading to Vista from XP. (COD4, NFS ProStreet).

I think you'd be fine if you would like vista. I've put vista on quite a few machines, and the only time I've had issues is with with less than 1GB of RAM.

The two things you need to keep in mind is that in order to run Vista and games properly, you need at least 2GB of RAM (no less, I cannot stress this enough), and a dual-core CPU.

Single-core and 1GB of RAM for office work only.

Mine pretty much runs at 48 on all cores. at stock. So, no, your temps seem to be fine. MY experience is simply that the Q9300's run hotter than other 45nm quads.

Have you checked the temps under load? Run 3d mark Vantage and see if it kicks you out?

Does the error have a number/code?

Possibly. Is it stable in 3d mark06?

its not DEP shutting your games down, is it? I have had that close UT3 a few times. :x

Data execution prevention. Its enabled by default. Hardware dep is built into your processor, the q9300. And afaik, there is no way to disable it, or for certain programs. Well i haven't found a way, yet.
