Hi can anyone recommend freeware helpdesk software based on PHP or ASP, or point out resources that would assist in developing such a system.

Ive been thinking to do this since last year never got to actually do it.
It will also help me to remember which problems is outstanding cuz people normally phone
after about the fifth call or so and people asking me to do something while i pass their cube
I often forget to help or do what they asked.

But the reason for never doing this is because of your statement "Pick your poison"

We use a app called Spark, this combines a 'msn' type interface for chatting internally (and possibly externally) if the right servers atre being run..
You can place a 'Online Helpdesk' icon on your website, from which users can then chat to support engineers
