Windows activation backup

I'm about to format my PC once again due to HHD that got damage.
I would like to know is there a way I can save my activation from my registry?

There are programs out there that can backup and restore activation info, I am not going to say which programs, google.

There are also sites that keep track of updates to XP/Vista and allow downloads/update packs.
