Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Hey,
I received a project from school and i was wondering if someone could help me out.
I was asked to compile exact specs to the best gaming computer one could buy and do a presentation on the components etc
Could someone help me pick out such a computer.
Thanks
Alpha

Here..Its a bit n00bish though cause its already built for you.Building it yourself is cheaper 2.Im too lazy to look for prices now....
Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Won't two ATI 4870 X2's in Xfire scale better than the Nvidia cards?

Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
ya, but they are using generic brand radeons and BFG Nvidias. I'm pretty sure the new Gainward R700 cards would do a much better job, besides, they just look so awesomejustinufo wrote:Nah.In this review the gtx 295 scales better. In some games by a huge margin and in others not.
Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Thanks, but cant you get way better rigs by building them yourselves?justinufo wrote:Here..Its a bit n00bish though cause its already built for you.Building it yourself is cheaper 2.Im too lazy to look for prices now....
Btw, there is no cost limit for this project

Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Whats the total?Cause a rig like that'll bankrupt you. Thats rig I posted is actually overkill.
Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Those were mostly driver issues though.justinufo wrote:Nah.In this review the gtx 295 scales better. In some games by a huge margin and in others not.

Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Yeah i read. The two cards ATI cards in crossfire wont be to bad though regarding performance and price.
Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Is this only for presently-available equipment?
The new Core i7 processors will be out soon (they replace the 940 and 965 EE) and seem to be faster.
Also, Windows 7 is not strictly available yet, but Vista is the only OS you can now actually buy, and it's arguable as to whether it actually is better than XP.

Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Wow, best project ever.
If there is no price limit, you may want to look into going dual-Xeon. Look at server hardware for the most part as it is obviously going to be the most powerful, also far more RAM bays to work with so way more RAM, obviously dual channel.
Your other option is to go Intel i7 with a top of the line board and Corsair RAM. As far as I have heard, you can overclock an i7 to 4.2Ghz on air cooling alone.
You should definitely look into setting up an overclocked system, so maybe look into some sort of watercooling so you can get the most out of the system.
Another option, if you are up for it, is to build a server farm cluster to handle all your processing, and then run quad-SLI on top of that Overkill? Perhaps, but awesome.

Well, server hardware is out of the question, unfortunately...Alpha_1 wrote:Hey,

Don't get me wrong, server hardware is made for computing madness, but not for gaming. There is one PC/mobo you can go for that supports 2 intel core 2 quads. The skulltrail mobo, it is derived from the server side *insert giggle here*, but it can be used for gaming.

Lol why not?. I'll game on what I see fit.Well, server hardware is out of the question, unfortunately...
@Kasyx check the PC in my first post.
My next PC will most likely be a dual Xeon(bottom of the range though). Server hardware is just so much better.
Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Thanks but Fanatic-X is right, i think Dual Xeon is just way outa the choices

Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Show me any decent server with the capability of taking any form of nVidia or ATI graphics card. Dedicated server motherboards does not have slots for monstor GPU's as you don't need it in what a server is used for.Nuke wrote:Lol why not?. Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
If you want to go Xeon nope. All high end server boards have onboard VGA only.

Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
That, Intel skull trail, dual processor board with 2 extreme edition 771 quad cores. I'd be keen to set one against an i7 rig.
Re: Help with a Powerful Rig!!
Well personally, i think i would prefer a skulltrail rig. Dont know about the performance comparison but 1)2 CPUs just looks awesome 2) i havnt seen a waterblock for a 1366 so cooling would be an issue
