What is the real deal with MULTI-PLAYER gaming in SA??

Post by Mattie »

To me it seems that the only way to play multi-player games in SA (excluding you lucky bastads who have ISDN lines). Is by playing lan games ,things like gamespy seem
to be useless to the most of us, it´s a pity though because we get few chances to experience the real fun of multi-player games like tribes UT2k3 ect.People in America can play MP games with ppl all over the world and better yet they don´t even have to pay for it (Yep telephone calls are free in the us ED:-).

We should try to fix this problem by getting servers for each province so that we can all enjoy fragging. The ppl over at SAIX should try to at least make their site a bit more user-friendly,cause I for one don´t have a clue to what is going on on that site.

ps:what do you guys think??

Thank Telkom for this situation. LAN´s are the only way to go for mass multiplayer games at this point.

If Lan gaming is the only way then there should be more of them. There aren´t many and the few I hear about are so far away I can´t go except by bus and I don´t have the money for that. Lans should be held more often and be spread out over SA so that those of us who live in small towns away from the cities will be able to attend them to.

Is there a chance that ISDN might become cheaper? Telkom can cut down on installation fees and the ISPs can lower the subscription costs. That way more people will be able to afford ISDN and multi-play will become more popular.

ISDN issint the answer for international gaming either. There arent too many places u can play without insane lag.(I have 128 k and 2 isps for testing).

ISDN has a high latency, so you will get bad pings. Speed and latency are not the same thing.

Yeh but bandwidth and latency go hand in hand. The higher your bandwidth the lower your latency.

An Isdn line is lot better then a analog one cause it has more bandwidth there for lower latency!

Oh well laning is still the why to go, social and no internet costs!

Forgive my ignorance but when I tried to play Tron on Multiplayer over 128k ISDN line, it worked fine in some instances, but in others it said my ping was too high to join a game.

Is there a way to solve this, or is it a set ping rate?

Snowmonkey: No it doesn´t. It depends on the route. You can have a very high bandwidth but also a high latency. Satellite for example can have a _very_ high bandwidth, but has a 3 second latency. We were looking into satellite as a transport medium for transactions, but the latency killed that idea. On the same medium, however, a higher bandwidth might give you a lower latency, eg dialup to ADSL or something

Ping rate is latency!
When there is alot of activitey ie sending and recieving your ping rate rizes.
The only way to reduse a high ping is to get a fast IC or play when there is less people.

The server is odviously set up in such a way that only people below a certian ping rate can enter!

You should lan more often then you can play any game!
Ye ok that may hold true for wireless connection like satalite.

But ADSL it´s not cause it running through cables and there no interferance ie radio waves and that sort.

I still think you should rather lan.

Yeah lanning is better tahn online playing, or at least i thinks so, coz then you can insult the others without having to type it. Been a couple of close calls at my lans between two guys or more (Once, two guys were fighting over a bloody network cable). Hey is anyone from durban or pitermaritzburg or ladysmith here and willing to play against us? We get tired of killing each other after a while and need a change. Hell, we´ll even transport all our crap to whereva. There´s only 8 of us. Even less coz two or three are mostly at varsity half the time. Damn this place sux.....

If you are talking about the second telephone operator, don´t get your hopes up. They said (in January) that it would be up and running as early as March, but nothing has happened since. Also, rember that one of the applicants was the owner of a panel beating company, so I would not expect a miraculous improvement in service over Telkom immeadiately.

The thing is if telkom are alone then we have no choice but to support them, but if there is competition for customers then both companies will do their best to satisfy their customers.Even if the other new company isn´t that great I think we will see improvements in telkoms actions.
