GTA IV problems with launching the game

Post by GuntherHanne »

Well, I know that there is already an official GTA IV thread, but I couldn't really find a solution to my problem. The problem I have is that this game doesn't want to launch. RGSC keeps crashing before it even gets started and that results in me not even be ably to launch the game.

I have searched the internet for answers but nothing has helped.

To start from the beginning, I can successfully install the game complete with RGSC, no problem there. I have created an account with RGSC and Windows Live, and there too, no problem. I even have been able to register the game with the product code, no problem.

No this is where the problem starts. When I want to launch the game, or rather it launches RGSC, this happens:

"RGSC has stopped working. Windows ....." it immediately crashes and the error report looks like this:

Description Stopped working
Problem signature
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: RGSC.exe
Application Version: 1.0.0.0
Application Timestamp: 491dd2bd
Fault Module Name: KERNEL32.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.0.6001.18000
Fault Module Timestamp: 4791a81d
Exception Code: e0434f4d
Exception Offset: 0002f35f
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

I have checked if I have the latest DirectX version installed and it seems I have, namely DX10. Rockstar suggetsed I install 10.1, but as far as I can gather I should have that also (part of SP1 - is that correct?). DxDiag shows 10. Does anyone know where to find 10.1? To date I couldn't find it.

I have also installed the latest .Net Framework, namely 3.5 SP1.

I have un-installed and re-installed above.

I have checked my regional and language settings of my pc, and these seem fine as well.

I have disabled SLi, but also no joy with that.

Somehow there is something that keeps me from launching RGSC and that is very frustrating. I am still awaiting a solution from Rockstar Support, but so far all their suggestions haven't helped.

Has anyone out there had a similar experience with this? If there's anyone out there that knows how to perhaps bypass this RGSC, please help.

First of all you have a Nvidia card.Nvidia doesnt support dx 10.1.Only if you have an ATI card with sp1 installed.Dont know how to solve your crash though.Sorry.

Thanks Justinufo, that explains the DX 10.1 situation, but that then shouldn't cause the problem becasue I'm not the only one running Nvidia cards and many others don't have this problem :banghead:

Well, joy at last. On 28 February 2009 Windows released yet another update, and this time the updates were Microsoft.Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .Net Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847). As this was an important update, I naturally installed it (them). After this I decided to download and install just the Rockstar Game Social Club and the update for that and I found I could now open this social club (where previously it crashed right there and then). I then installed GTA IV and, what do you know, it works now. Very thrilled about that :D. Now I just need to somehow optimise the game so that it's not so choppy and, uqite honestly, unplayable
