Project Dark Tranquility (Update 06-09-09)
Firstly, i have fixed my Badger 350 Airbrush
Ok, i'm still not hundreds as to what i want to do with my case, so bare with me while i toss around ideas.
I'm thinking of doing flames on my case.
Here are some tutorials i found
http://www.instructables.com/id/True-Fi ... ic-flames/
http://www.myartandcraftsupplies.com/ar ... lames.html
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/foru ... php?t=6311
http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/foru ... php?t=7757
I got some ideas for paint jobs while watching American Chopper
S'pose it would help to post a pic of the cover and what i'm thinking of doing.
Well, thats where i'm stuck. My case cover is an U shape. So i can either look at getting it laser cut into 3 pieces like Et did on his shuttle or i can make a new one. Its a pain as it is.
I also plan to fit some really high RPM fans to the side. they'll be 5000RPM and on a switch
I'll post a pic of my cover later. but check out the tuts in the mean time. I'm going dremel shopping soon which is a good start

5000RPM fans sounds like they will be loud... Anyways, glad you're starting a mod. Hope to see some good progress in the coming weeks
Re: Primes New Mod (as yet untitled)
Just douse the case in petrol and throw a match at it. Most realistic looking flames you will ever see!Prime wrote:I'm thinking of doing flames on my case.

Well I got my Dremel. Woot. Everything about it is impressive, from the design of the box, to the feel. Only thing is, the air vents on the tool get blocked by your hand
Pics soon
Hmmm, my case runs hot enough alreadyStuart wrote:Just douse the case in petrol and throw a match at it. Most realistic looking flames you will ever see!Prime wrote:I'm thinking of doing flames on my case.

Pics
I've been playing with the Air brush. So this is a base layer of flames sprayed onto a scrap Piece of metal.
Still need to do more layers and touch it up, but the light has gone now
Pics of my case coming in the next post

Pictures:
I'm still considering splitting this into 3 sections
Side view of cover
This bracket sits above the Graphics card and vents through the holes in the top. i'm considering putting a third fan in it
View inside my case. See how the Graphics card cuts the case in half...
Side view of my computer. I want to mount the 5000RPM fans on this side so that they force air through and the PSU with its 120mm fan will then suck the air out.

Thanks for those links, dude. I likes it. A lot.
For a first attempt, your effort on the flame work is not too shabby.
Are you actually going to go the whole hog and use the colours as described, and if so, who is your paint supplier?

i was actually planning to see if i could do it with humbrol enamel. Not sure where i'd be able to get fancier paints. I also need to get a pot for my airbrush. Currently it only has a jar and that consumes paint.
i did buy some french curves though.
I was thinking of making the flames lick out the air vents.
I found a flourescent orange and a similiar green humbrol which is as close to candy coloured as i think i'll find. Humbrol paints can be bought at most art, hobbie and toy stores.

Lol, thanks.
Did you get your package?
I'm also not sure if i should do normal flames or green flames. Anyway I'm going to carry on practice airbrushing.

Re: Primes New Mod (as yet untitled) Update 19-12-08
I have spent the evening experimenting with tribal flames. and i reckon mine look pretty sick. I've been spraying on paper to practice rather than my cover.
Later today, my dad and i are going to look at my case and see what sort of alterations are possible. I want to do all the physical alterations before i start spraying.
pics to follow(24th)
oh, an i've been trying different paints. Humbrol Enamel is proving to be a hassle. All the shops seem to have old stock so the paint has settled and hardened . And it makes a mess of the airbrush. Decoart acrylic seems to work nicely, and is fully compatible with aerosols. So i can spray aerosol clear laquer over it.
That is the problem with the humbrol enamels. They will go over the aerosols but don't spray aerosol over the enamel, it blisters.
i'm going to track down some tamiya (spelling?) paints and see how they behave.

Re: Primes New Mod (as yet untitled) Update 19-12-08
Yes please? Name of the shop and location?
How ever i still want to look at alternatives. Until i either by a new airbrush and i'm trying to justify it, or make some pots for my current one, i'm not going to be able to use enamels. They make to much of a mess. And its nigh on impossible to switch out colours quickly. Because you have to flush the airbrush out with solvents.
But by all means, have a look and let me know. Thanks
the stuff i bought looks new but when i tried mixing the paint, i discovered all the filler had settled on the bottom and gone hard.

That was my first idea. Not fantstic. it was done freehand. So having discussed it with some forumites in the spam thread, i went off and did some thinking.
A quick Google image search of tribal flames produced some good inspiration.
So I put masking tape on the sheet of paper i'd sprayed black and cut out some designs with my exacto knife.
2 designs i sprayed. The green was Decoart acrylic and the red was Plascon Aerolak.
The red unmasked. (Papers is not the best thing to try and cut patterns on. )
The green one.
The Green unmasked and given a blitz with humrol flourescent green enamel over the acrylic. I like this brilliant green look.
The white is wearing the masking tap bonded to the paper.

Re: Primes New Mod (as yet untitled) Update 27-12-08
So today i did some minor work.
I did a little sleeving:
I haven't heat shrunk the connections as its likely i'll reuse the bridge piece for something else. The fan is stuffed, the mounting points on the one side all cracked and broke, So i have ground them off. but hey, it was a cheap fan that i bought at Panthip Plaza in Thailand. i think it cost R40 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantip_Plaza http://www.into-asia.com/bangkok/shopping/pantip.php You can find almost any computer part there But most of it is grey goods or copies
The Second one came with a Vantec UV fan.
Then about the metal work:
After discussion with my dad, he reckons cutting the cover into 3 parts is both pointless and may ruin the structural integrity as it won't fit on properly afterwards. (and unless someone knows otherwise, silverstone don't make replacement covers for their cases. )
So basically, this bit with the holes in it is getting chopped out. And from there, we'll make a plan to cover the opening. I have been told that the ventilation people say that lots of little holes kill the airflow. You lose something like 50 percent of the flow. So several big holes are far more efficient than lots of smalll ones.
The Bit between the tape is getting cut out, but i'm leaving one row of holes for now in case i plan on mounting any fans.

Re: Primes New Mod (as yet untitled) Update 27-12-08
Well this proves to be a bit problematic, I tired to disassemble my computer the other day and found i couldn't get the graphics card out. I have no idea how i got it in either. You see the section, on most cases its cut away into the slot below. this allows you to get your ports past.
If for some reason i disassemble my PC, i'll fix this. but in order to get my graphics card out, i think i'll have to take out a screw on the upper port.

Re: Primes New Mod (as yet untitled) Update 27-12-08
Simply unscrew the graphics card and tilt the "toe" end of the card up, so it pivots at theside closest to the cable...should be able to pop it out then, surely?
