I've got the following versions of Linux:

Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop I386 (PCF CD136)
Ubuntu 64bit AMD (PCF CD139)

Kubuntu 7.04 (PCF CD125)

Fedora Linux 8 (PCF CD132)
Fedora Core 6 (PCF CD119)

OpenSUSE 10.2 (PCF CD124)

Now since I know next to nothing about Linux, which of the following:
1) Is the latest version of Linux?
2) Can run windows .exe files?

EDIT:
3) What is main differences between all these versions? (Ubuntu, Fedora Core, OpenSUSE)

1) of that list, i believe ubuntu 8.04 has the most recent kernel, (2.6.24), or at least, that closest to the mainline version, (which is currently at 2.6.27 or somewhere thereabouts.)

2) well... all of them... sort of... but none will do so very well.. the exe runs under wine, which is a software emulation environment - neither fast, nor stable... it is possible to install windows inside linux, (xVM/XEN/etc virtualisation)..

3) aside from personal preference?

ubuntu 8.04 is fairly solid, comes feature ready and has the added drawcards of being LTS, (long term support), and built on a newer kernel...

both OPENsuse, (windows nooblet favourite), and fedora are rock solid but your versions are somewhat dated by now...

Ya, ubuntu is on 8.10 and Suse is now opensuse 11.2.

I prefer Opensuse, that said, i have never had much joy with any of them.

You can download opensuse 11.2 for free or you can buy the box set with all the manuals and 16gigs of extra apps for about R1000. I'm not aware of a local seller though :(

Opensuse also requires a DVD drive to install and its over 4 gigs :shock:

Most major hardware vendors have drivers for Opensuse, i'm not sure if these files run on Ubuntu. Most forumites swear by ubuntu so you'll get the best support for it here :)

I only swear by ubuntu because it runs debian ( i like debian ) and because ubuntu has reach a form a critical mass ( thanx to dell ) . Dell started shipping some of there notebooks and pc's with ubuntu a while back. This has lead to a massive user base. As soon as you have a large user base you get more dev programming with that os in mind. Also the os becomes more streamlined with cool features such as auto installers and clearer syntax. and example. I have been running ubuntu on my notebook for a few moths and fedora on one of my servers. fedora is till stuck in the compile from source / makefile era. Ubunto on the otherhand is popular enough to have precompiled releases for most apps.

I'm using Fedora 7 and I am so impressed with it.
Been working on an old system as my old RAM has been sold and I await new RAM.

It. just. works.

No BSOD, no junk, installs are easy, updating is easy, utils are comprehensive and stable and overall it's awesome.

The only reason people dislike Linux is because they actually have no idea how to use it.

Suse Nvidia drivers are quite hard to install compared to other flavors.
Soon Google will know everything...including how to divide by zero :(

Im really starting to look into a rolling distro. So no upgrading every 6 months. Its starting to get a little bit annoying. Looking into Debian or Gentoo. Need a challenge again :D

Fedora 7 took 2 lines of code and that included to download and install the drivers.
I'm really happy with Fedora but I need to get V.10.

Ubuntu auto install the driver after installation or with first update.
