ISDN 128K and Telkom R7

Post by BillaBoy »

Hi

Anyone of you have this setup? When using ISDN 128K your modem make 2 connections.Do you need to have 2x R7 specials from Telkom.I mean I only have one phone number. The way I see it using 128K costs R14 per go.

Can anyone confirm that, otherwise I dont even want to know what my bill is going to be

I can confirm you will pay R14 per dial-up session. You ISDN modem dials up on both digital channels thereby costing two phone calls. Its the same as being online on one digital channel and using the phone on one of the analogue channels. If you are using Telkom Internet however you should first sign up for the 128k service because it is not enabled automatically and costs extra. Otherwise your modem will dial up on both channels without actually giving you the 128k speed and yet still charging you for it.

Hope that helps.

ok... confirmation....
to install isdn cost a couple of bucks... (like installing a new phoneline)
to keep it cost about R198 a month , but you get 2 lines...
your isp will charge you extra... (absa went from R68 to R150 a month)
that is a total of R250 a mont and you havent even dialed up yet...
to get R7 call-more.. cost just under R50 extra...
that is a total of R300 a mont and you havent dailed up yet...

if you connect 64k... then it is R7 for the whole night (or weekend )

at 128k its going at R14....

that is a crap load if you ask me....

but lets compare... I get 16k a second download against all your 4 maybe 4.5k modem...

on a weekend you get 700mb if you are lucky... I get 2.3gb from friday to monday...

not bad if you ask me.... (that is a lot of mpegs and games... heh heh )

that is my confirmation ...
adsl at R700 I hear you scream??? well to hell with adsl... they wanna give me a 3gb cap??? i do that in 4-5 days max.... and then it is still cheaper than adsl... hoo haaa!!

I think the installation cost for ISDN(regardless wether it is 64 or not) is R400. I have ISDNa, which I think means that I can dial up with 128K. The line rental is R160+-.Then I have the R7 special. And I pay ABSA R160/month for 128K connections. I only go online weekends at 128K and checked my statements yesterday. Wether I connect with 64K or 128K I still pay R7 for the weekend. And you can drop one line if you want to use your house phone. This weekend my total traffic was 4GB. I downloaded Toca Race Driver(2cds) and XMEN 2(2 cds) I also started downloading Collin Mcrae (3cds). All full game image files.

So to me, the 128K ISDN has been very much worth it. Stuff ADSL and its 3GB Cape

Hey billaboy

So your saying you dont have to get the R5o (7randcall) for both lines? =R100 just for 7rand call?

You only have 1x 7rand call for both lines/calls?

I only have one of those R7 specials and it applies to both lines. So I only pay R50(or something like that) for the special.

The strangest is, that I pay R7 for a weekend, wether I connect with 2 lines or 1. I went through my itemised bill and was quite surprised.

I get my games through a file sharing program called DC++. You must be willing to share though.

Okay let me get this straight.. are you 100% sure that you only need 1 R7 plan (InfinityCall) and a 128k ISP? Also you say that you can drop the second line if needed (for example use call waiting on line 2 to get calls) and then reconnect at no extra R7? Please make dead sure that this is what is happening. I have ISDN 64k and will consider 128k if that is the case. Currently I get around 1.5GB per weekend so 128k will be 3GB stuff ADSL and the cap! Full time access would be nice though but is not always necessarily a good thing!! Please let me know about the multilink ISDN!!

greedyfly...

It works like a normal telephone line. Everytime you dial up it costs and extra R7 depending of course on how long you stay online.

So, one R7-a-call plan works on both lines. So lets say you are surfing on one line and your gf phones out on the other and chats for five hours you will pay R14. Therefore if you dial-up on the second line it will be the same.

If you dial up on the second line and then drop it later to make a call, and then dial up again when you´re done it will cost three times R7 depending of course on how long the call lasted.

Hope that makes it clear...

Greedyfly you only need one 7R call as it is only one phone number, but you pay for 2x calls if you dail up at 128k (with max of R7 in callmore time)64k digital + 64kanaloge

So if you go on over the weekend you must stay connected at 128k or the second call will be R7 every time extra.

When you r not downloading huge files, then only connect at 64k and then u can recieve calls from the second line.

Hope that helps.
