THE NEW GUY....

Post by Mega_CT »

hi guys...

im new on here. Im not a IT specialist, im not even in the industry, & ive browsed through a few threads & you guys seem pretty helpful, so i joined

anyway, my system.

CPU: Intel Hyper Threading 3Ghz 800mhz Single Core.
it has a Gimini 2 CPU cooler, with 2 x 120mm Fans.
Ive also got a AEROGATE3 Coolermaster Control Panel. My CPU temp is at 33'C

Motherboard: I`ll get the proper specs still. but its a pretty good board aswel.

PSU: 300w (upgrading to a 600w soon)

Ram: 1024mb, 667 mhz, ddr2, 240-pin RAM x 3

Graphics Card: NVidea 8600 DDR2 512mb 128bit

ok, now i want to overclock my CPU. im aiming for a 3.8GHZ. will i be able to get that? & also i need a step by step guide to overclock, or even a application which will allow me to do that.

i am planning on getting a VGA cooler aswel. so when the time comes i`ll need a guide to overclock the vga aswel.

Lastly, what do you guys honestly think of my system?
I generally use my pc for gaming (Bioshock, Gears of War, etc) to watch movies, & to work (im a architect)

ps: is there any OC veterans located in the CPT area that are willing to help me OC. i dont want to take the chance & if something goes wrong im stuck  most of my IT buds dont/havent OC`d....ya i know.

Thanks, I hope to get good feedback.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Please introduce yourself here.

If you haven't already, check out the stickies in this section - you'll probably find some good advice there. Also check out the stickies in the Benchmarking subforum. If you're still stuck after that, we have some pro overclockers (*cough* I34z1k) who can really help you out. I don't know anyone who OCs in Cape Town though (stay away from g0ldback, he breaks stuff).

I can't help you myself though, as I'm not an overclocker.

Damn you gonna have heat and lots of it-Don't know if the cooler can take it but I34z1k will know.
i am planning on getting a VGA cooler aswel. so when the time comes i`ll need a guide to overclock the vga aswel.
You can do a little overclocking with ati tool (and others we will list) at the moment but load speed fan to monitor your systems temps. Custompc.co.uk has a nice VGA cooler round up.
I use a very expensive cooler but there are much cheaper out there which you would look at.
Lastly, what do you guys honestly think of my system?
I hate Pentiums but it's not bad. It's the average older system here I guess.
Most of us have Core 2 duos.
Soon Google will know everything...including how to divide by zero :(

Prescott? You'll never get to 3.8 on a Prescott with just air cooling. Those things hit boiling point quite quickly
Mega_CT wrote:Motherboard: I`ll get the proper specs still. but its a pretty good board aswel.
One of the biggest deciding factors of your rigs OC ability is the motherboard. If we dont know what board you have, we cant really say what kind of OC you could acheive.
Mega_CT wrote:Ram: 1024mb, 667 mhz, ddr2, 240-pin RAM x 3
What RAM :?:
Again if you have some generic brand it's not going to support your CPU OC.
You have to realise, if you havent already, that you dont just OC your CPU, the whole system must get OC'd. If you don't have the proper mobo, RAM and PSU you are farked.

I'm not much of an OC'er - but I can tell you that coming in green and just asking the more experienced guys for everything on a plate is probably not going to work.
You have to do work on your own. Use google and ask when you have a specific problem.

You dont even seem to know in-depth specs of your rig...

I hope you can get to 3.8 but I doubt anybody is going to hold your hand or spoon feed you all the way there.

I hope I don't come off sounding unfriendly - I'm actually a delightful chap - ask anybody!

Give us specs eh :)

I mean there are so many variants of the P4s that I could tell you it's safe to pump 1.5v through it and aim for 5ghz, but that could also pop your chip within minutes.

Download cpu-z and upload screen shots of the cpu, mainboard, memory and SPD tabs.

Cheers
Mike

P.S Just cause the Gemini is big, doesn't mean it's good. In fact it's far from it ;)

Ron2K :hi, & thanks for the link. i`ll post pu there shortly. thanks for the advise...i`ll stay away from goldback.

g0ldback : thanks dude. i like it here already :)

Frozenfireside : i`ll drop I34z1k a p/m.
i dont really know if i should rather get a newer vga, because ive had my current setup for about 2yrs now, i think its time for some serious upgrading. now if only i can find sum1 who wants to build a "new" pc
yeah, i know my single core outdated, but pointless sitting with 2 cpu`s. :?

jamin_za : dang. i THINK its a prescott. if memory serves. so would you recommend i rather get another chip to OC. & leave this one alone?
i`ll get the full specs on the m/board & update u guys.
i have Hynix memory. i normally buy my hardware through Sahara or Rectron.
Thanks for the advise. im just asking around in stead of just using google, because google isnt always on "YOUR" setup. understand?
no worries, its monday. ur excused for being crabby :)

I34z1k: thanks. i`ll give it a shot. i got the gimini as a bday gift from a buddy. but seems "ok" core temp is at 33'C

howsit, first thing id suggest, get a bigger psu, then we can move onto the overclocking, you will need more power to get those clocks up. then we can go into more detail about bios settings you can change etc
when in doubt, paddle out... ;)

howzit,
im planning on getting a Isonic 600w psu. mid Dec.
but i saw a thread on here suggesting not to go with Isonic, so im keeping a eye out for a good 500-600w psu. budget <R600
any suggestions which one i should go for?

thanks for the help thus far.

Mega_CT, look at a gigabyte 550w or a coolermaster 550w they are pretty damn tough andwill handle a decent system even under OC. personally i have the gigabyte superb 720w running my system. and its only costs around R1200 now

Yeah id be careful of isonic, i bought one, and it blew my mobo and cpu fried, was a terrible experience.

a good solid psu will help overclock better, my isonic i have now can hardly overclock before refusing to even boot. and i also have the isonic 600watt psu.
when in doubt, paddle out... ;)
