That is what Neotel has been doing for the past 5 years or so.Frozenfireside wrote:Sweet guys. Should be happening in the next 5 years so I wouldn't hold my breath It takes a hell of a lot to get communication lines up for an entire nation.

Also companies like Vodacom can now havetheir towers communicate directly with each other rather than hopping the signal through a land line. They won't need to lay physical cabling.

Re: Telkom Monopoly Essentially Over
The company I work for has just asked Neotel to provide our offices with lines etc.. They've been laying cable in our area for ages and apparently they're ready to provide service to some areas now (our office being one of the areas).
Will let you know how it goes.. don't hold your breath

I agree. We'll notice no consumer benefit for years to come.
Good news though, long overdue.

This is the world of CAPITALISM. There is not a chance that you will see any of the benefits from a consumer perspective. If you so happen to be one of the companies that has the capability or the funds to make such a venture you will however seriously score. Since when does prices on these things actually drop. The supplier will however get a serious boost in net revenue.Rayne wrote:I agree. We'll notice no consumer benefit for years to come.

Re: Telkom Monopoly Essentially Over
What if companies start charging higher prices to make up for the amount they spending to lay cables?

Then they charge higher and loose clients.DeathStrike wrote:What if companies start charging higher prices to make up for the amount they spending to lay cables?
But we will start seeing improvements on data from telkom id say, but we will just have to wait and see.
Yes it will take time but if neotel could do it why cant the rest, they stuck in there.........
We already have sentec, vodacom, mtn, iburst, neotel now with wireless. neotel starts fibre soon, just wait till the others follow, Vodacom i say is best to have the capital to something like this.........
These providers are so to say in the same price with R2 per meg thats now without the packages they give, if they can do it why will it others have it higher????
It will all just come down to services that they offer.
Thanks to Stuart

I'm sorry for the negativity in what is clearly a positive news thread, but how and why is everyone getting excited over Neotel?RuadRauFlessa wrote:That is what Neotel has been doing for the past 5 years or so.
From what I know they'll have sole access to the new Seacom cable, which is exactly like what Telkom had before with the SAT-3 cable. Whose to say they wont monopolise it like Telkom did? Then there's the issue that most of their broadband offerings will be based on WiMax technology. So there goes your latency out the window if you were hoping to use it for stuff like online gaming.

QUESTION is CAN I GAME WITH NEOTEL??????????????????????
Sofar ive read that the answer is no, being only 2.4mbps fast

Dude, you dont really know much about networking ??Wurn wrote:QUESTION is CAN I GAME WITH NEOTEL??????????????????????

it is not the 2.4mbps that is the issue, it is because it is currently a wi-fi option the latansies will be horrendous, but for average day to day surfing, no issue.
You can game with a 512kbps line, that is more than 4 times "slower" than the 2.4mbps, but you will have less latansies. and Latansies is bad, that basically means that while playing a FPS ( first person shooter) you will see a guy, and he will see you and popp you and be hunting down the next dude by the time you shoot.

Re: Telkom Monopoly Essentially Over
oh yes but to answer your question, no, gaming on Neotel = bad idea, at least until they have their landlines available ..

Which will be even better than Telkom's offering as it will be based on fibre optic lines instead of traditional copper, if I'm not mistaken!1rr3t4t3d wrote:gaming on Neotel = bad idea, at least until they have their landlines available ..

Fibre to the curb is not cheap (read EXPENSIVE!), its mainly targeted at enterprises.
What I type has nothing to do with the people that employ me.

just ot let you know, we already looked at getting fibre for our office.

Re: Telkom Monopoly Essentially Over
Your assumption that i dont know about networking is not very cool! You can even game on 384kbps line while someone is surfing on youtube at the same time (in simple terms). Even here latency for fps games will be a problem
My point i was making is that even if its 2.4mpbs its still not enough (because of the wireless factor). I did not feel the need to explain the point in full.
But thx for your answer anyways!

Go have a chat with people from Krone. The Fibre vs Copper is not an issue. Fibre has a limit of about 2Gb/s at the moment and that is if you actually trunc it. They are currently doing 10Gb/s over cat6 cabling.

Re: Telkom Monopoly Essentially Over
I just wanna say that I game with a 512kbps wireless connection
Latency of 40 at best, average around 65ms however its not very stable alot of the time so that 65ms can quickly change to 655ms
I did hear some good comments from guys gaming with a Neotel connection on myadsl.co.za forums

I am 63% addicted to Counterstrike. What about you?

This is possibly gonna make me sound like a n00b but how does a connection that travels at the speed of light have a limit?RuadRauFlessa wrote:Fibre has a limit of about 2Gb/s at the moment and that is if you actually trunc it.

Re: Telkom Monopoly Essentially Over
the limit is in how fast the hardware surrounding the channel of light handles it. In a fully secluded lab environment the light can go on for eva but the hollow fibres used does still eat up some of the signal strenght. That and the fact that the controller you hook the line up to can also only convert the light signal at a certain rate. Then you have the situation where the light has to shine for a minimum amount of time for it to register a 1 and another length of time for it to register it as a 0. So yes there are alot of limits.Xiphan wrote:This is possibly gonna make me sound like a n00b but how does a connection that travels at the speed of light have a limit?RuadRauFlessa wrote:Fibre has a limit of about 2Gb/s at the moment and that is if you actually trunc it.
