Burning plastic smell (new system with 4870)

Post by Lethoric »

So I got my GeCube 4870 yesterday and put it in. I did the fan xml hack and set the fan to 40% and idle temps dropped from 78 to 40 degrees. Very impressive. And the fan is barely heard at that speed. I have one problem though. My pc has this smell like burning plastic. Is it just the card thats new? Or do i have to be worried? I put the pc off and felt around for anything warm or melted cables or something. But found nothing..

On a different note I was wondering if you guys think I should get a new cpu cooler? Because my cpu is idling at 45 degrees and goes up to 56 at full load. (cpu is at stock speed)

Thanks for any help!

hey Lethoric,

I have also had that smell before, but honestly not sure what it was either. but this was in systems without graphics cards... could very well be the first time the motherboard has power and it is...

i say take the 4870 out and boot and run like that for a few hours and see...

What cpu do you have?

I have had the smell before as well. I reckon its just a capacitors farting .

If you say capacitor's farting, is that good or bad? Lol. Should i worry?

I have an E6400 Core 2 Duo. Going to nehalem at end of year, so i don't want to upgrade yet. Ive had this cpu a year and a half now...

nah, then those load temps are ok for now... my wife's got my old cpu which is the e6400 - nice cpu still...

i would wait until you get the upgrade, then decide what cooling you want/need...

capacitors farting = LOL!!

Yeah I think it could just be cheap plastics used to make some parts. I remember opening up some cheap chassis and smelling burnt plastic.

Could be something to do with the manufacturing process but those temps, as everyone else says, are fine.
Soon Google will know everything...including how to divide by zero :(
