Viruses on clients' PCs
OK.
For not the first time, I made backups off a client's PC and when I wanted download it to the archive at the office MSE picked up a virus. Rimecud or some such other.
It's starting to get on my nerves. And might become a problem if I visit more than one client before I have time to scan my USB drive for viruses and I start spreading the little b*ggers.
I'm considering making a bootable Linux memory stick - but haven't got a clue which flavour to use or even how to go about it.
Can you guys think of a better way to copy backups without getting infected?

A surprising amount of modern pseudoscience is coming out of the environmental sector. Perhaps it should not be so surprising given that environmentalism is political rather than scientific.

No idea - but you do get a program that protects memory sticks/USB drives from catching viruses - but if the virus is in the backup files - not sure what else you can do.
http://www.usbvirus.com/ seems like a nice little program

Doo, I'll walk you through setting up a bootable linux usb via PM if you're interested.
Other options include getting a usb flash with a read-only (hardware) switch (like a stiffy :p).

Thanks Lemmetjie - I've found a number of how-to's on the web that deals with that.

Easiest will be Lili USB Creator (or something along those lines, just search for Lili & Linux).doo_much wrote:Thanks Lemmetjie - I've found a number of how-to's on the web that deals with that.

And Xubuntu should be the least graphics-intensive interface and the most user-friendly.

Re: Viruses on clients' PCs
I lost points for having different genitalia? Really? Would you prefer it if I were male? Wow. Most guys are glad I am female - but ok.
Besides - I could not have pulled that off if I were male - you would have seen right through it. But we females are silly and naive and that is why it worked. So you cannot penalise me for the one aspect that ensure success.

Re: Viruses on clients' PCs
goto pendrivelinux and download :
x-boot multi-iso linux boot creator.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/xboot-mult ... b-creator/
add + boot into any number of "live iso's" like acroniss dd , hirens ,firmware flashing allsorts ,etc using a usb drive or creat a multiboot cd/dvd
only thing is u loose the extra space on your flashdrive as some of the live iso's dont recognise the flash as 1-there thinking there running off a cd...small loss...just pack it full of live isos - 4 gig is good enuf
oh-it also has a handy built in qemu emulator - so its usefull for testing ur bootable usb without having to restart ur PC - a great app
if u only need 1 bootable os - go for universal usb installer.
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal- ... -as-1-2-3/
the benifit of this 1 is that it can write the extra space on your flashdrive into usable space in the linux distro - ubuntu works great.
as for the viruses - jes-if theyre on the pc you r backing up - all u can do is clean them when u detect them back at the office
hope that solves all your live iso problems
