jamin needs a new PC
Well 'need' isnt really the word.
Let's just say I have $3000 (±R24000) burning a hole in my pocket...
Here's what I have so far:
INTEL CORE i7 3930K 3.2GHz 12MB RETAIL BOX - NO FAN (BX80619I73930K)
ANTEC KUHLER H2O 620 CPU COOLER (0-761345-77085-9)
GIGABYTE GA-X79-UD3 DESKTOP MOTHERBOARD (GA-X79-UD3)
OCZ VERTEX 3 240GB 2.5" SSD SATA3 550/500 (VTX3-25SAT3-240G)
WD CAVIAR GREEN 3.5" 2TB 7200/64MB/SATA3 (WD20EARX)
GIGABYTE GTX680 1006M/6008M 2GB/D-DVI/HDMI/DP (GV-N680D5-2GD-B)
GEIL 32GB KIT DDR3 EVO CORSA C9 1333MHz (GOC332GB1333C9QC)
COOLERMASTER SILENCIO 550 BLACK CASE (RC-550-KKN1)
CORSAIR 850W TX-850M SEMI-MODULAR POWER SUPPLY (CP-9020004-AU)
MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL OEM/64BIT (FQC-00765)
LG BLU-RAY 12X COMBO (CH12LS28) RETAIL (CH12LS28)
If I shop around I can get these components cheaper than in the links but its still pretty close to $3K either way - maybe $200 bucks to play with
Looking for suggestions/comments
No AMD and ATI fanboiism will be tolerated
I'm open to all other suggestions

Re: jamin needs a new PC
Only thing that I would fault in that list is the 2TB HDD -- the WD Green range is great for reduced power consumption, but performance is extremely sucky. (That statement doesn't only apply to Western Digital; it's the same with all HDD manufacturers with equivalent ranges.)

Re: jamin needs a new PC
Go for an Intel SSD. The 510 or 520 range will do. Why DDR3 1333mhz? The 1600mhz will give a nice boost with bootup and program opening.
Then finally you need to buy some nitroglysarine and use it for cpu coolent. That way you'll be blown away by the performance and you will make some forum members very happy.

Why only 32GB of RAM? Surely you need 64GB to cache your favourite TS girl "movies" in RAM for quick access?

Re: jamin needs a new PC
On the motherboard, why not go for the Asus Rampage 4? Unneeded extras?
And for cooler I would also recommend the Corsair H80.

I would stick with the Gigabyte, but admittedly that's the Gigabyte fanboi in me speaking.StarBound wrote:On the motherboard, why not go for the Asus Rampage 4? Unneeded extras?

Re: jamin needs a new PC
Hehe. The MSI fanboi in me wanted the one with the bullets and chain gun cooler:

I looked at a few options but everywhere something was wrong one way or the other. So went with Asus on this one.

Re: jamin needs a new PC
What about a monitor, audio? Also, might consider a GFX with an aftermarket cooler if you are fanatical about fan noise.

Price. 1600 is almost twice as much, or I can get 16GB of 1600StarBound wrote:Why DDR3 1333mhz?

Price. And the Gigabyte has what I need for a lot less. USB 3, SATA 6GB, SLI, quad channel DDR, zonke!StarBound wrote:On the motherboard, why not go for the Asus Rampage 4? Unneeded extras?

I am going to keep A/V files on it, doesn't need to be fast. But with all the other hot noisy crap I'm buying being cool and quiet will be nice.Ron2K wrote:Only thing that I would fault in that list is the 2TB HDD

Cheers for the replies guys - keep them coming.
No comments on the gfx card?
Re: jamin needs a new PC
An alternative upgrade path; instead of buying a new computer, just continually buy smaller and smaller screens to run your games on.StarBound wrote:Maybe he's running it on a 14" cga monitor with low settings? then it will almost be like running idle
Get a GTX680 with an aftermarket cooler. The TwinFrozr's are nice apparently....Jamin wrote:No comments on the gfx card?

Re: jamin needs a new PC
X530's seem really out of place, considering what else you're aiming for. I'd replace those with a nice set of Z-series, at the very least. Pity the 5500's are discontinued. I'd get their replacements just for the heck of it.jamin_za wrote:26" Dell LED LCD and Logitech X-530's already in use...StarBound wrote:Maybe he's running it on a 14" cga monitor with low settings?
Also, on the SSD, while I cannot speak of Intel, I can say the Corsair's Force3 is also worth having a look at. I have one here in my dev pc and wouldn't have it any other way.
As for RAM, you don't need 16GB, let alone 32 Let's be clear here, those are purely for bragging rights

Most games don't even use 4, let alone 8... Might re-look at 16GB, maybe 2133's

Re: jamin needs a new PC
When you run an SSD you dont use a page file. If you encode vids you'll get better use from faster ram.
Yeah a 680gtx MSI twinfrozer 3 will be nice but it seems all geforce 680gtx cards runs much the same. Just lower temps if its the MSI TF3.
