Ubuntu question.
Ubuntu question.
Can I not play any games ever on Ubuntu?
First off, theres a thread for Linux OS's, Ubuntu being a Linux distro
http://www.pcformat.co.za/modules.php?n ... wforum&f=3
Second off, have a look at this thread

That thread is a little deceptive, cs:s didn't end up working for Dae, but you can play a few games. Mainly id software OpenGL games like quake4, Doom3, etc. But you have to download a linux installer. An installer for UT3 is on the way. Google Cedega for more games.
oh, and you can always dual-boot! (have both windows and linux on one PC.)

Re: Ubuntu question.
@ the Linux peeps.
Building myself a media pc with the following specs: Sempron 140, 1GB ddr3 1333, on-board gpu for now.
I intend using Ubuntu as the OS. Are there any advantages / Disadvantages to using Ubuntu 10.04 64bit over the 32bit version?

Re: Ubuntu question.
answer the man!
64bit would be my first choice, once i was happy that the onboard had a stable driver path...
weren't the semprons single core?

yes, the Sempron 140 is a single core, but why would I need anything more for playing media?

Re: Ubuntu question.
what mobo are you running?
the trick with onboard GPUs is to check the ubuntu knowledge base for compatibility issues... some of the older ATI cards have been dropped from the primary package repository....
might i ask what media apps you're looking to use?
<edit> the reason for asking is, if you're after ease of use/setup, you may wish to grab a distro like mythbuntu

Re: Ubuntu question.
My mobo is an Asus M4N68-T
It runs an old nVidia chipset, which should mean there are Linux drivers for it.

Re: Ubuntu question.
So, after some googling I was lead to the conclusion that I was stupid to think the Linux thing would be anything but easy.
Apparently, my chipset and motherboard are either not supported, or haven't been tested yet. The system should work, but we shall see...

Re: Ubuntu question.
launchpad has a number of open issues with the on-board sound, most of which were encountered during beta and never confirmed closed...
i say, go for it... you stand an even chance of losing some time or developing a new skill
added to which, 10.04 is LTS, so expect patches and support for 2 more years...
