Q6600 oc question?

Q6600 oc question?
Okay so I got my quad today and noticed some thing funny from what I understand is that intel locks the CPU multiplier correct?
This is my first core2 so I'm not too familiar with the inner workings.
my bios gives me the following option extra..???
I can select between 6X and 9x ratios?(which one would be better to OC with)
And I can select freq to unlimited?
Now the question is which of the ratios should I use?
The second one should enable or disable freq unlimited??

CPU multi's are usually only locked from going upwards, thus u wont be able to set it above 9x.
I would recommend setting it at 9x, so that u dnt need such a high FSB to reach a good freq... And no, the freq is limited by ur mobo. The limit on decent boards are around 500mhz.

are you talking about FSB speed??The limit on decent boards are around 500MHz
Had a test run on a 400FSB and got oc of 3.7 not bad but that is the limit.
SuperPi score wasn't too bad either 13secs down form the stock 21secs...

Yip that is true I have given max extra zaps and I read a 100 guides of the board....Something needs more volts.
The problem simple really need the extra 4pin cpu connector untill then I can't go any higher than 3.2...
The 3.7 was a lucky but wasn't stable enough to bench.....

Multiplier - leave it at x9 - reducing this means a higher FSB to achieve the same o/clock and that in turn means a higher northbridge temp and it's own stability issues for the mobo. Ever tried holding your northbridge heat sink for longer than 5 seconds...it will hurt you!
Your sig says you are running your Q6600 at 3.2GHz. What CPU voltage adjustments (if any) did you make? Is your system stable under load?
I'm now running the same CPU stable at 2.8Ghz at 1.3V but have not tried to go beyond this yet.

So what you are saying is that by upping the FSB only, one does not generate extra heat on the NB and CPU, even though they are now running at a higher speed on standard voltage.

Yea. Many people don't understand overclocking. At first I thought it was al so bad, but voltage affects temperatures, speed only makes a MINISCULE difference. Test temps on 6x multi @ 1.5v. Lower clocks, very high temps. Voltage gives more heat, but more stability. When you don't change voltage, you are just using the excess stability of that piece of hardware.

Well lets see runs stable at 3.2GHZ stable without the need of adding any extra juice to the system lucky me.....Don't try this at home.!!!
3.6 and higher is stable the heat on the otherhand isn't so yeah so unless you have the nerves of steel 1.45v on the core pushing 1.49v aircooling does the job well
2.8Ghz?? Um your going to have to push a lot harder to get a system unstable unless of course you mess some thing up in the bios...

Mike I don't agree with you. You are right about the affects of increased voltages, but what I've found out with my Q6600 (GO stepping )was that I can leave my cpu voltage stock 1.250Vcore (1.200 actual) and go all they way up to 333 x 9 and my temps will increase from 38C idle to 45C idle. Loads will be from 53C at stock speed to 66C at 3Ghz. Now going higher, say 400 x 8 (or 355 x 9) the temps will be up to 73C under load, and that's with the stock voltages. When I mean loads, I mean running 4 instances of orthos, one for each core.
This was all on air cooling using an ASUS P5K Deluxe mobo with the 404 bios.

Perhaps my Q6600 was one from the bottom of the barrel as I could not get it to run stable at 2.5ghz without upping voltage. I t woulod run stable right up to 2.8Ghz until I ran MS Flight Sim X with all sliders at full detail. It wouold then fall over (reboot) after anything from 5 mins to 30 mins. Only did the with flight Sim X but this is about the only thing I use the PC for so it was a big issue for me.
My CPU has the term SLACR on it and I understand this was the better version of the Q6600 as it is more power efficient that the first ones. perhaps it is the other way around though?

Think it is Microsoft Flight Sim X. It is really abusive towards the CPU and then I added a pay ware aircraft that is equally CPU intensive and i think the combination is just too much
Anyways I seem to be 100% stable (touch wood!) at 2.8ghz with the CPU voltage upped to 1.3. Not saying this too loudly just yet as it's only been a few days....
