It's odd for starbound to finally like a game when everyone else thinks its carp.

Re: Duke Nukem Forever is going to be released
I didnt buy it yet. I felt the demo was lacking in many ways. But the people on my steam friends list is happy with the game. I just don't see myself enjoying a game for all the worst aspects of a decade of shooters crammed into a game developed over 12 years.
Re: Duke Nukem Forever is going to be released
So after anticipating a weekend of Duke, Speed Services weren't so speedy and I only got my copy yesterday. Great. Check the back "one time activation via STEAM required", great. Install Duke, "one time activation" = 400Mb download on my 3G card - Fail? Total cost of game: R345 + R100 data.
After making my peace with that, I started playing and have the following comments:
After making my peace with that, I started playing and have the following comments:
- -After reading many reviews, it appears the issues with screen tearing and long load times are only on XBox version. PC version has no such issues.
-The game mechanics are fun for me. I'm not a huge fan of modern FPS, I play FPS for run and gun, not tactical decision making on the go, ammo conservation, stealth yadda yadda.
-The game is pretty fugly. As others have pointed out, it looks like Doom 3. Fail.
-Despite the above, the game is a bundle of fun that, although I am loving, will likely not appeal to people who haven't played the original. Half the fun is the nostalgia.
-Finally, I hope Gearbox use this as a platform to now run with the series. I think a total graphics overhaul and some dynamic tweaking of the gameplay mechanisms could spurn a really enjoyable modern FPS.

so, pretty much what i took away from the demo... yet another sub-standard shooter on rails with console-tardation built in for the mouth breathers...ars technica wrote:Verdict: Skip

Just finished it. I agree with Jonboy. Graphics is poor and it is an old style of gaming, but I enjoyed it partly due to the nostalgia and partly because it was just fun to play. Some people say the jokes are lame and the humour is toiletty (they are), but I think it is pretty much par for this franchise. Maybe it would have done much better ten years ago.

Re: Duke Nukem Forever is going to be released
The one thing I havent said was I never remembered duke being so overly sexed up even back when duke 3d was released. Infact Duke 2 didnt even have the hundreds of women. Either I never grasped dukes personality or whoever worked on this game missed the mark completely. Is this the way that Duke was originally meant to have been?
Ok so apart from the flewed release and bad game would you like to see a new duke game? I would but not when you have to compare with Call of Duty or Battlefield. It needs to be a game in its own right and if it means going back to the drawing board so be it.
Drop the aliens that was in duke 3d and get something original going. Forever looked good in 2001 but 10 years later it didnt.

Good post StarBound. I'm not sure I'd go as far as ditching all the old aliens seeing as it needs to keep its identity to some degree though.
Don't understand why people would pay R350 for the sake of nostalgia when you can get Duke 3D at GoG.com for $5.99.

I got the game and I don't like it. It just feels cheap and broken.

I think your hubbie will be happy to hear that next time he wants to buy a cheap anniversary giftTribble wrote: Or I am just easier to please
This is one game that I am going to skip. I feel no reason after playing the demo to take it any further. What I will say is if they manage to get Dukes personally right and start looking at what old school shooter fans want then maybe we could see a Duke Nukem Defcon 5 or something released. I would like to see a redeeming game instead of letting him die after this.
