Friend buying first gpu

Post by PC G@MER 01 »

High people my friend is buying a new gpu but has to choose between these:

gt 640 R925
hd 6670 512mb gddr5 HM R887
hd 6670 1gb ddr3 R887

The games he is going to be playing are Battlefield 3,Assassins creed 3,GTA 4,NFS MW 2012,Crysis 2,Hitman Absolution ens. And he wants to play these games at 1280x720 at medium graphics with no AA or AF or at 1680x1050 at low graphics.

Should be possible on any of those. He might be looking at 30fps and medium to low though. What cpu and ram does he have?

Then also I tend to lean towards nvidia but with low end cards amd tends to be the better choice. 1gb card should do the trick.

Why not try and get one second hand?

I'd go for the HD6670 1GB because at those resolutions you can still add some AA and higher quality settings. 512MB isn't enough for many games even at low settings these days.

Cpu: core i3 530
Ram: 6gb normal ram
He can't stretch his budget and even if he could i'd have rather recommended the hd 6750 or hd 6770 that's the same as a 1gb hd 6670. He also wants to know what they mean by up to 2.2 gb hyper memory.

Oh and he also wanted to know how much performance he could gain from overclocking it.

He'll have to do a net search on the overclocking potential but if he is strapped for cash he cannot risk the smoke of a new card.

6670 1gb it is then.

It uses your system ram as an extension of graphics ram. It was something nvidia used with the old 620GT card years ago. The card had 64mb onboard ram and then you could set 128mb/256mb as video ram via turbo cache. The thing is your limited to the speed of your own ram then which made it slow compared to the onboard ram that runs at a higher combined clock.

I would do the same. Bought a 6870 about a month ago for R1k, and that is a billion times faster than what you would get new for R1k.

Otherwise 6670(the 1gb version) it is

1-2fps advantage to the 512mb version however when it comes to textures the bigger memory the better. Skyrims HD texture pack needs 1.5gb of gfx memory to function effectively. Also AA ect is more memory dependant. But more memory puts a higher strain on the memory controller which makes the lower memory version faster until they can't handle the load and need to continueously swap.
