MSI R6670 problem please help

Post by Ashlee Smith »

Hello so this is my first post but you can find me on Guru 3D (clueless Noob) or HardWare Canucks (I_need_a_new_rig)
Right the sexy details aside this is my annoying problem:
So at Rage 2011 i bought my self a MSI R6670 1gig GDDR5 from Inter computers Centurion
I have this system: (Warning might cause utter disgust and major pity for me)
Intel Celeron e1500 Dual core 2.20 ghz 2threads 2 cores.
Intel Foxconn G31mxp-k bios 2009 pci e x16 see i think this is the problem not right pci e version??
Kingston 2gigs 800 mhz ram Running at 677mhz
Samsung Sata 2 320 gigs 16mb cache 7200 rpm
Dunherm Case X Fox with 1 x 8cm Red Cooler Master fan and 1 x 12cm Cooler master Green Led Fan Good air flow!
Xgr 450 watt psu (dont like it much but have not had problems)
Then the MSI R6670 (says pci e 2.1, but when i check it in catalyst manager it says 2.0  )

SO the problem is i get this tearing between images like vertical sync but worse theres two right above each other it is really annoying and it does it in my games to! so i am worried i am damaging my card or is there a different solution?
What i have tried:
Reloading my drivers
Changing screen cords from VGA to DVi
Checking my psu
No such luck. :(

So does this only happen in games or does it happen on the desktop as well? Try enabling Vertical sync in your games.

As for the specs of the rig I dont see anything wrong. I have a G31 mobo(gigabyte G31M-ES2C) and a GTS 450 and I have no problems. You can run a PCIe 2.x card in a 1.x slot so that is not the problem. Also could you by any chance upload a picture of the problem

It depends how often it happens, if it happens when your gpu is under stress then its just because its an ATI product and is a known issue regardless of V-sync. My card screen tears in a few games and obviously in Vantage its most apparent

Well it will be like going from a scooter to a superbike....so yes there will be a big difference. Nothing wrong with your temps from what I can see. I know you cant get a screen shot of the problem but you can use a camera to take a picture of what you see on the screen

Yes, upgrading your CPU will make a HUGE difference. The tearing might be because your current CPU can't feed your GPU with enough data fast enough, so it wants to render stuff, but it can't!

The 6670 is not a brilliant card, but it is good enough that you'll see a huge difference in the speed of your games once you upgrade RAM and CPU.

At least you are trying to upgrade the right stuff. I know someone who I gave an old AMD 3500+ and 1GB RAM towards a PC. He got a basic motherboard and I think also a 6670, but with this system he wants to play GTA IV!

I was running my my 6870 with a Pentium D haha and I was able to play Fallout NV but I had to keep the graphics settings low otherwise it lagged, I didn't encounter any screen tearing however...
Is it a usual screen tear?

To answer your question its 1600 by 900 60hz 32 bit
its a Samsung Bx2031 LED using the DVI port with the original cord i got with the screen.
heres a interesting thing i found when i updated the drivers now on amd_catalyst_11.10_preview_sep26-[Guru3D.com]
it says my monitor can support up to 1980 by 1080 and 240 hz max but when i change to it it works fine but my screen pops up with a messages saying not optimum mode recommended mode 1600 by 900.
But to answer your question its a 60 hz monitor running at 1600 by 900.

Wow I think that is a rather high resolution for a Celeron based system so maybe it is you CPU. But according to Samsung that monitor has a maximum resolution of 1600 x 900 at 60Hz so possibly you have the wrong monitor drivers installed as it should report the maximum to be 1600x900 @60Hz.....1980 x 1080(is that not 1920 X 1080??) at 240Hz is not what you monitor is going to be able to do

http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-p ... cification

Edit: I actually have a Samsung 2033sw which is slightly older than your monitor and is not LED backlit but it is relatively similar and has the same inputs and the same maximum resolution, I have had no such troubles with it. As I said try installing your monitor drivers again(the ones on the disk that it came with) and make sure you select the ones for the Bx2031 as that disk probably contains drivers for the larger versions of that monitor series as well

Something must be wrong because your monitors maximum resolution is being reported incorrectly are you 100% sure you installed the Bx2031 drivers(I dont know if Samsung's still have separate drivers for digital and analogue)

This is one of those odd problems, maybe you could test the card in a different PC or try a different CPU(something more powerful). I dont know if reformatting and installing everything from scratch will fix it but that might be worth a try so if you have any spare HDD's lying around try putting a fresh copy of windows on that and then install the Games which give trouble.......and obviously remove the existing HDD during all that
