Okay I know this is kinda self-promotion since it's the site I run... but if you're a budding 2D or 3D artist and enjoy creating sci-fi stuff, then be sure to check out our latest challenge over on CGTalk.com:

http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?threadid=178327

We've organised over $28,000 worth of prizes and you get three months to do it in!

Can photo elements be used or must the whole thing be made from scratch?

i think its from scratch. out of your head type of thing.

If it's 3D then photos can be incorporated into the textures, but for 2D entries they must be entirely from scratch in a digital painting application like Photoshop or Painter.

Our judges are seasoned veterans and we can spot photographic elements right away ;)

Is it just me, 'cos the link doesn't work

And I guess if you do a 3d image then you're not allowed to do any further editing with a 2d editing package?

Another note, about these contests:

We've been running these challenges on CGTalk for a few years now. And the whole idea behind them is that they are work in progress challenges, which means that you cannot use anything that you created before the challenge started, and youhave to post milestones throughout the duration of the challenge. Certain milestones are compulsory so check the site details for that.

Please note that these are high profile contests. They have a great reputation and the last one we ran had over 2000 completed entries from across the world. The sponsors are very high profile so this is a contest which should be taken very seriously.

Bio-Hazard - the link is definitely working!

OnlyOneKenobi - post effects are allowed on 3D images.

Count me out. I suck at creating stuff from scratch. Well. Then again. I have a lot of time on my hands from 9 November so maybe I'll give it a bash

Well guys, skills or no skills it's still a fun challenge :) Many people doing it solely as a learning experience.

Just to give you a sense of the quality of work we get in them though... in the past we've had entries from artists who work at the following studios:
- Pixar
- Weta Digital (Lord of the Rings)
- Blizzard
- Ubisoft Montreal
- Bungie (Halo)
- Dreamworks
And many more!
And the cool thing is that these guys do help out with advice and suggestions on other peoples entries! It's a great way to grow as an artist and to get exposure for your work :)

Sadly as an employee of the site, I'm not allowed to enter myself :(
