Curriecup Woes

Post by Sojourn »

I dunno who's following this, but this year the Freestate team
is making a big impression on me. Not only did they win the majority
of their important games, they also play to a 27 pointer draw against
the all-high-and-mighty Bulls this past weekend. If you consider that
none of the top teams could pull a win against the bulls yet this season
and that the Cheetas dominated with their forwards a huge part of the
game, they are sure to stand in line lifting the cup this year.

Its just that infernal issue of rounding things up and not letting slack
near the end of the game.

The cheetahs have always been threat.
They just can't seem to play 2 big games consecutively

Fourie breaks Bulls hearts

Lions Flyhalf Nel Fourie landed a pressure-laden injury time penalty to give the Lions a 36-33 (halftime 20-17) ABSA Currie Cup win over the Mobil Blue Bulls at Ellis Park on Saturday.

This pulsating encounter showed why the competition is still paramount to South African rugby success and although both sides were shorn of their Springboks, the talent cupboard certainly isn't bare.

Bulls flyhalf Derick Hougaard's comeback after a dismal 2003 continued with another assured display in which he slotted seven out of eight kicks at goal for a personal haul of 18 points.

Fourie scored 16 points, but it was the last three that were vital, as the five points earned for the victory lifted the Lions off the bottom of the table into sixth position.

It was the Bulls's first defeat of the season, but they remain on top of the Premier division standings on 14 points, ahead of the Free State Cheetahs on points difference.

It was a match that was always in the balance even after the Lions ran into a 15-0 after just 20 minutes. Fourie opened the scoring with a penalty and after ten minutes wing Oginga Siwundla increased the lead with a well-taken try.

Number eight Roland Reid, who recently returned from a couple of years in Scotland, scored the Lions' second try when he collected a well-weighted Jorrie Muller chip kick.

The Bulls looked dangerous despite what the scoreboard showed and after Hougaard slotted a penalty to put his side on the board, scrumhalf Norman Jordaan sniped over the line from close range to narrow the lead to five points.

With two minutes to half time the Bulls took the lead for the first time in the match when centre Frikkie Welsh somehow found space to squeeze over the line and Hougaard converted.

The Lions did not crumble as it appeared they might, and immediately bounced back when flying wing John Daniels collected a Bryan Habana chip and outstripped the covering defence to score in the corner and take his side into halftime three points to the good.

Once the second half restarted the match was a war of attrition with the two flyhalves dictating matters with a series of swapped penalties. Hougaard landed three and Fourie two as the hour mark came up with the scores locked at 26-26.

With 10 minutes to go Bulls lock Geo Cronje stretched out a long arm to score his team's third try after the ball had been worked through four phases from a five-metre scrum.

It seemed the game was up but the Lions produced the try of the season to haul their way back into the contest. Replacement lock Kleinjan Tromp was the scorer - in the left hand corner - but the 10 phases before, starting inside the Lions 22 was pure theatre.

Fourie landed the tough conversion setting the stage for a frantic final three minutes. After fluffing a drop-goal attempt just to the left of the uprights, Fourie was awarded a second bite after flank Schalk van der Merwe had been tackled without the ball. He made no mistake.

Scorers

Lions - Tries: Oginga Siwundla, Roland Reid, John Daniels, Kleinjan Tromp. Conversions: Nel Fourie (2). Penalties: Fourie (4).

Bulls - Tries: Norman Jordaan, Frikkie Welsh, Geo Cronje. Conversions: Derick Hougaard (3). Penalties: Hougaard (4)

The Cheetas are a fine team as are all the top teams, it seems that on the day any one of these teams are capable of winning :!:
However for me there is only one team and that is: :!:

Good old wit_skapie picked up on the fact that the Lions have beaten the Bulls this season, also they have had one or two quite narrow escapes, Pumas come to mind!

@ wit_skapie, soccer jersey! my ( . ) :!: And it is not soccer, it is Football :!: I am at this moment searching all my files for your address :!:

Province did well on Saturday, got their three points and a home semi-final, I was satisfied. Bulls had to change their "vuilgat" game plan before losing badly, Naas made a "gat" of himself with his asinine comments and my mate Andre Watson is retiring, thank goodness :!:

Will be at the Cheetahs game on Saturday and will of course, hope for the best, it is a new ballgame now!

De Wet Barry cut the Bulls to shreads in midfield and it was only the BUlls forward supremacy that allowed them to score in the final minutes against 13 WP players.

Anyone have a ticket for me for the Loftus final?

And at which part of the game did you decide to ignore the WP 'vuilgat spel'. But then again WP can't take a beating in good spirit. They always complain about dirty players etc. Also note-worthy is the fact that the Bulls didn't even have their strongest players on the field.

YOda, I am searching for your address too :!: In the first minute of the game Andries Human hit the ruck with a stiff arm aimed at Schalk Burger, from that moment on it was obvious what the Bulls plan was; play a so-called second string team, then if anyone is red carded or cited, it makes no difference! Look WP are not angels but there is a fine line between "vuilgat" and physical play. The constant warnings to Geo Cronje ( who, by the way did not injure his cheek himself) did not result in a send off but when the two WP replacements came on and did the same they were given cards immediately. Deservedly I may add; all I am asking for is consistency with decisions, not the prima donna style of refereeing which is now permeating all the games in our country! A referee has a duty to perform and consistent dercisions is one of them.

I will ignore your remark about WP not being able to take a beating, we are as capable as the next man when beaten, I do not complain about losing but this bleating about a second rate Bulls team is so much bull. The Bulls are extremely blessed with having so many good forwards to choose from, I challenge you to tell any of them face to face that they are the Bulls second rate or as you put it, weaker players.

Playing at Loftus is never easy, but as the Lions showed, it is possible to win against the Bulls and has been shown in past games it is also possible to win at Loftus in a final! WP and the Sharks have done it.

Are you from Pretoria YOda :?: I only ask because you say that you are 700 kms away from Jhb :?:

LOL @ lancelot. I will kindly give you my address if you wish. Just be warned, I am a tru Bull supporter and will fight to the death to support my team. I agree with your statement about the referee but it happens and the truth is the WP could have scored a lot more in the first half. The fact is that when a team plays foul it will also count against them. Saturdays game was in fact a strategic move if you ask me. And I'm not implying that the team that played on Staurday are in any way inferior to other players. But they didn't play as many games this season as the others.

I agree with you that foul play shouldn't be tolerated, no matter who the team is. But to go around afterwards and cry to everyone that an injustice was done is weak. Suppose thats why they are the Wuss Province.

And you should be able to take a beating by now. You've gotten so many of them...

Yeah the weather here get's pretty extreme in the summer. But we have warm winters so it's not all bad. The mines here are having serious trouble coz of the Rand strengthening against the Dollar. A lot of people have been laid of in the last year.
