I would like to be able to upload photographs to an online storage facility where only my family may browse and download them.

I have been thinking about using either Google drive or Dropbox for this. I don't see buying something like an HP micro-server as an option. [unnecessary expenditure, we would need the services of someone trustworthy to look after it]

What do you think of using either of the facilities I mentioned, and what might be a better [cloud-based] alternative?

I think Picasa might be the least hassle if everyone has/most have a Gmail account already. It has album functions in it IIRC.

I think OneDrive might be the least hassle if everyone has/most have a Microsoft account already. Album functions can be replicated by using folder names.

I think Facebook might be the least hassle if everyone has/most have a Facebook account already. Just mark the albums private, share only with certain people.

Picasa seems to be the most practical for us.

Dropbox - it's easy to use and set up

With Dropbox, you run the risk of hogging other users' potentially limited bandwidth if they have installed the app and download immediately what you upload. Microsoft doesn't offer this basic sharing feature in Onedrive: Other users have to log into the Onedrive website to view shared folders.

I agree that something like Picasa may be better in this case so users can select what to download--unless they all just want to automatically download anything you put up there.

I haven't used Flickr for a while (a loooooooooooong while) Does anyone know if they're still viable?

Try Facebook first though. Yes, they don't offer the option of downloading the original super-hi-res version of the photo (do they?) but it has the privacy controls about who to share with and also the added ability of friends and family to comment and stuff.

Or have you settled on Picasa already?

If you still interested. You could get your own server and run a program called owncloud on it. It is basically a private Dropbox.
Edit. You could even set it up on your home PC and use dynamic DNS to point to your PC to get access from outside.
