So I just bought a used car for the ever increasing family. It's a 2007 model, so the factory warranty is obviously out of place. The dealer said that, by law, they have to offer me a two year / unlimited km warranty, which covers various components. Basically, for somewhere between R6,300.00 and R12,050.00 I can get a warranty that gives limited cover on things like engine, gearbox, differential, etc. Evidently to claim once per year.

Any thoughts on whether it is worth it to pay for the warranty?

I would say it depends on the car. some extreme examples:

1. City golf. Spares easy and cheap to find, can be fixed with flat head screw driver, no.10 spanner and some gum <- does not require warranty.
2. Renault Scenic. Spares have to be imported and are expensive, requires specialised tools and labour <- requires warranty.

I would say, yes, go for the warranty. I don't see the "Platinum" column, but the Titanium option is a bit much. For 30 grand you can get a high performance engine replacement, something I doubt you are interested in. I would say go for Gold.

On the sheet they gave me at the dealer it's called Platinum, but it's the same as the Titanium on the link.

I also figured that it was a bit excessive, but I'm a bit of a sucker when it comes to warranties that I never actually end up using.

Had an SA Warranties extended warranty on my Civic when bought in 2011, bought a 2008 model. I got it because of the turbo, and being a 2nd-hand diesel and all. Turned out to be a waste of money as I never used it. Then again, for some people it's a case of rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. It would also depend on the type of money you would have available should something go wrong and you don't have a warranty in place.
The Ti is a bit over the top though- but ultimately it's your decision. Are you going to load it onto the finance price/term?

You bought a Honda. Only thing more robust is a solid piece of granite.
