Steam connection problem

Hey guys.

I have not used steam in about 8 months and the other day I tried to start it up but it kept giving me and error.

Firstly I keep me steam folder on my "games" hard drive just in case my OS drive crashed I do not have to download all my games again.

So I clicked on the Steam exe and then it started an update.

After the update it asked me for my password so typed it in and then it gave me an error "Coudn't connect to steam network" and then Steam closes.

I have 3 Steam folder Back ups just in Case and all of them have been giving me the same problem, I then download Steam and Installed a fresh version and it will always give me the "Coudn't connect to steam network" error.

I did some reading and some people fixed there problem by deleting the "ClientRegistry" BLOB file.

But not for me. :/

Has anyone else encountered this problem, if so how did you fix it ?

Thanks

Byron

can you connect when starting with the -tcp flag?

are you running some form of filtering on steam traffic, (steamwatch/etc) ?

could you start in offline mode?, (if you've trashed all you .blob variants, not likely now)

the probable solve can be a little nerve-racking...

I have tried all those.

This problem just makes me hate steam.

Lets here the nerve racking solve ?

I also just deleted every file and folder in the Steam folder except for the Steam exe and the appcache folder and now it is updating again.

I highly doubt it will solve the problem.

by appcache you meant steamapps... right? because the appcache is disposable rubbish but steamapps is the game installs...

regardless, that would be the "nothing's working - reset!" option, yes...

Just future references, your game data is located in steam/steamapps/common . So next time I suggest you atleast back that up first and place it back once you installed steam.

I have backed up the steam folder in three different places, I am only using the one at the moment to try and get going, still no luck I am going to email Steam support and see what they say.

Yeah sounds like a routing problem. Unless you've been hacked. You are downloading Steam from www.steampowered.com right?

Silly question time... Can you connect to their website? I take it you can since you emailed them but just checking. Uninstalled and reinstalled the Steam client? Checked your Windows Firewall settings? Checked with your ISP?

Like I said silly questions but hey anyone of them could result in a fix.

Ask them if they are gonna let you redownload all your games without having to pay for the data :P

BTW, which ISP? Might need to stay clear of it.

It was with Web Africa. (They have awesome service)

I installed a clean version of steam thinking that there was something wrong with my old version but there was not so once the problem was sorted and I could connect I uninstalled Steam (The clean version with no games) and then went to my actual Steam folder which is 70 Gigs and just let it update and it worked.

Also there is an option in steam which allows you to choose which server steam must use to get its content from. Mweb, IS and Web Africa have servers so I chose the Web Africa server since I am with them.

I think that the ISPs have a deal that if you use their servers and download data through steam it will not reflect on your account ?

I can remember a year or two ago, Web Africa had WAGE servers and if you had a Web Africa account and played on a WAGE servers they would not charge you for the data so maybe the same applys to the content servers ?

It also wouldn't matter because I have an uncapped account.

I only have a Web Africa account and I only started getting this problem when I moved back to Web Africa.

I was originally with Web Africa then left them to go to Mweb since they had awesome prices on uncapped accounts and then a year later Web Africa also had uncapped deals that were roughly the same price maybe a 20 rand difference but the service I received from Web Africa was far better than Mweb.

One phone call to Web Africa and I have my steam sorted out within minutes, If I phoned Mweb with this problem they wouldn't even know that steam is a program.

SEACOM was sabotaged? again?

WA's steam content service has always been dodgy but should *never* effect login...

The weird thing was I eventually logged in but it told me I had no internet connection :/ but it somehow logged in. ( This was before I changed the content server from Mweb to WA)
