We have a 1Mb uncapped ADSL line at home. It's been working perfectly for the past year.

The router is downstairs and is connected to the upstairs hub via cable. My mom's PC connects to the router directly, and the rest of the PC's (1 Win XP, 1 Win 7 and 2 Win 8 ) connects to the upstairs hub. One laptop connects via Wireless.

1 of the windows 8 PC's (my brother's) was bought last week Friday. Ever since we plugged that PC in, we've had internet issues. We can't access the internet unless his computer is on. As soon as he switches it off, it takes about 10 minutes and then the rest of us are unable to connect to the internet.

Does anybody know why? I'm going to trouble shoot it today, but I have no idea where to start or what to look for.

I would be interested to know what the network settings of the PC are and also what the DHCP and DNS settings of the router are.

Okay I'm posting from the Culprit Windows 8 PC.

I don't know exactly which network settings you want, but here goes:

IP addresses are all set to Obtain Automatically. Currently it's as follows:
IP Address: 192.168.0.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DHCP and DNS also as above.

Then under Ethernet Properties it's got the following ticked:
Microsoft LLDP Protocol Driver
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver
Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder
Internet Protocol Version 6
Internet Protocol Version 4

The routers DNS is set to obtain from ISP and the DHCP as far as I can see is set to On. But I don't know what that means lol. I last worked with networks in High School.

What network mode are you working on? Home, Work or Public? Also, when you go into the properties page for the Ethernet controller, what's ticked on the "Sharing" tab? Are you running a HomeGroup?

Weird... Problem still persists.

When the PC is on: Internet is on.
When the PC is off: Internet is off.
When the network cable is remove: Internet is on.

So it's definitely the PC doing something weird...

Have you done a sniff on the Win8 pc with Wireshark yet?

When the networks goes down, can you ping 8.8.8.8 and can you resolve www.google.com with nslookup from the other pcs?

True, Wireshark is not for everyone. Lets talk about other tests first then.

What does pinging 8.8.8.8 successfully tell one?

8.8.8.8 is one of google's public DNS servers. I use it as my test IP on the internet, because its easy and quick to type. Also I have never seen it down, you can use any public IP though. Its just to establish that you have basic IP connectivity to an international server.

If I troubleshoot I use the OSI model is a reference, seeing that every layer depends on the previous one. When I have layer 3 connectivity(in this case pinging 8.8.8.8 ), I don't even look at layers 1 and 2 (well almost, but we are talking basic troubleshooting). Then I can just move on to layers 4-7(if troubleshooting networks I see 5-7 as a single layer).

Troubleshooting is quite an interesting topic.
